Well done to the club's athletes who took part in the Connacht Primary Schools cross-country at Beleek Castle in Ballina last Saturday.
There were some fantastic results, particularly for Craughwell NS who won the 3rd/4th class girls 800m and 5th/6th class girls 1000m team events. Linda Porter (Ballymana NS) equalled the club's best ever performance individually by taking the silver medal in the 5th/6th class girls 1000m. She was joined by youinger sister Laura in the individual medals with Laura in a fansastic 10th position overall and also Orla McDaid (Craughwell NS) taking a great medal in 12th place.
Padraic Hannon (Carrabane NS) was in hard luck in the 3rd/4th class boys 800m where he was pipped on the line for a top three place, having to settle for 4th place.
The best performance by athletes from the club in this event previously came in 2003 when Craughwell NS won the team gold in the girls 1000m with their team of Caitriona Farrell, Ashley McDonnell, Yasmine Tobin, Rachel Kelly, Cianna Greene and Kelly O'Donoghue, and Rachel Finnegan (Ballymana NS) won individual silver in the 1000m. Cathal Greaney (Craughwell NS) won an individual medal in the boys race that year when finishing in the top 12.
The following year 2004, Paul Concannon (Brackloon NS) and Micheál Hannon (Carrabane NS) took individual medals when finishing 7th and 9th in the boys 1000m while Ashley McDonnell (Craughwell NS) finished in 12th place to take an individual medal in the girls 1000m.
In 2005, individual medals went to David Concannon (Brackloon NS) in 3rd place and Michael Hannon in 9th place in the boys 1000m and Aoife Callanan (Ballyglas NS) in 6th place in the girls 1000m.
2006 surpassed all of the above with the aforementioned 2 team golds, 1 individual silver and 3 top-twelve finishers. The Craughwell NS gold winning teams were - 4th class girls: Sarah Molloy, Gabrielle Tobin, Tara Keady, Maeve O'Connor, Shauna Burke and Carina Coppinger; 5th/6th class girls: Orla McDaid, Debbie Kenny, Katie O'Donoghue, Caoimhe Quill, Sinead Gaffney, Maria McNamara and sub Mairead McCann. Particular credit to Katie who had a fall during the race following an elbow to the ribs and to Caoimhe who as she passed Katie on the ground, inspired her to get back into the race and finish strongly for the team.
Credit also to the two Craughwell NS boys teams who finshed in 7th place and 5th place against top quality opposition. The 4th class boys were in hard luck to be only 7 points behind the bronze medal winners - a slight variation in finishing order would have put them in the medals. Hard luck to Matthew Freaney who finished just outside the individual medals in 13th place and also to Patrick Phillips who had been sick leading into this race and had to pull out during the race. The 5th/6th class boys finished 5th against a very high standard field, 33 points off bronze medal place - a very good performance against the best in Connacht.
