An interesting history of the Irish Schools Athletics Championships has just been published by Athletics Ireland on their website. Some surprising statistics in it including the list of top 32 most successful schools in terms of gold medals won which features just 1 Connacht school – St Jarlath’s Tuam with 33 Irish titles – an athletics tradition that sadly appears to have died out in St Jarlath’s. Interesting also that one of the longest standing records is that of Galway Olympian Paul Donovan with 2 minutes flat in the Junior Boys 800m in 1978.

It includes a number of titles for athletes from our own club including Ann Loughnane (Race Walk 2002 and 2003), Cathriona Farrell (high jump 2005, 2008, 2009, long jump 2005 and 2006), Katie O’Donoghue (Pentathlon 2011 and 2012) and Linda Porter (1 mile, 2010).
