Some of the Craughwell AC gang in the Emirates Athletics Arena in Glasgow

The club enjoyed massive success at the second weekend of the Scottish Indoor Championships held Saturday and Sunday in the impressive Emirates Arena in Glasgow where the club came home with 5 medals – 2 Scottish titles, 1 silver and 2 bronze – the best performance ever since we started going to Glasgow all the way back in 2008 when the current crop of athletes who travelled were mostly aged between 6 months old and 3 years old!

A large group of 43 parents and athletes made the trip over to Glasgow for the weekend, successfully navigating the challenges posed by the new airline cabin baggage and boarding policies – do I go priority or non-priority, do I book a seat or not, which is faster, which is cheaper, how much shopping will I fit in the bag going home, will running spikes get through security, etc.

And it’s not just for the competition that the club makes the annual trip over to Glasgow … everyone had a really good time socially and sightseeing and shopping in Glasgow’s fabulous city centre. It’s a really great weekend for the club and not that expensive and something athletes and parents can look forward to each year when in secondary school if exams permit. The club would also like to pay a compliment to the fantastic hospitality that we had in the Premier Inn Georges Square. The staff went out of their way to be as accommodating as possible, allocating most of the group their rooms on the same floor, minding our bags and even organising a birthday card and gift for an elderly member of the group!

Darragh Kelly - Scottish U13 Indoor High Jump Champion 2019

The weekend got off to a great start with a fantastic gold medal and Scottish title for Darragh Kelly in the U13 Boys Jump on Saturday. Darragh put together a brilliant series of jumps over 1.38m, 1.43m and 1.48m to take the Scottish title in style – the 4th time an athlete from the club has taken a Scottish high jump title, following in the footsteps of Jerry Keary (U17 Boys Champion 2016), Aisling Keady (U14 Girls Champion 2012) and Cathriona Farrell (U17 Girls Champion 2008). Darragh’s 1.48 places him joint top of the UK and Ireland rankings for U13 Boys high jump this year!

Evan Hallinan and Lukas Schukat, gold and silver medallists in the U15 Boys Triple Jump

It was an incredible weekend too for Lukas Schukat and Evan Hallinan with both competing in the U15 high jump and triple jump. Lukas leaped to a fine PB and first-time clearance of 1.68m in the U15 Boys to take the bronze medal in a top quality competition where Evan Hallinan also came close to the medals when placing 6th with a 1.58m leap. Both boys made it a very proud moment for the club later in the day when placing 1st and 2nd in the U15 Boys Triple Jump with Evan taking the Scottish title with a very impressive 11.05m leap and Lukas taking the silver with a 10.15m leap – the first time the club has achieved the distinction of having 2 athletes on the podium at the same time in Scotland.

The medal-winning performances were completed by Jade Moorhead who leapt to a fantastic bronze with a super jump of 1.48m in the U15 Girls High Jump – bringing the medal haul for the weekend to 5 medals and the club’s most successful weekend ever at these Championships since it commenced coming over to Glasgow in 2008.

Fauve Aylmer ran 2 blistering races in the U15 Girls 800m to dip under 2:27 for the first time with 2:26.97 and took 6th place in the subsequent time-trial final with 2:27.01 - her 2 fastest times ever on the same day! And only for a stumble on the home straight in the semi-finals which likely cost 2 or 3 seconds, Fauve would have an even more impressive PB coming home. Clodagh O’Meara was also very impressive with a 2-second PB when placing 4th in the semi-finals of the U15 Girls 800m in 2:33.81 and narrowly missing out on the qualification for the finals.
