Last Sunday, the juvenile cross country club scene swung into action in Tuam’s Palace Grounds where Craughwell AC had large numbers taking part.

First on the agenda, the U10 girls 500m followed by the boys 500m. For many of the Craughwell AC competitors, this was their first ever cross country race and they all performed superbly to complete the challenge without stopping and for some, to finish in the medals. There are no team placings in the U10 races, which is a pity, only individual top 12 get medals. Full results of the Craughwell AC girls are as follows:-

7th Ciana Reidy
9th Saoirse Bourke
12th Aoife Walsh
13th Sandra Greaney
14th Laura Cunningham
17th Avril Donoghue
18th Caoimhe O’Donoghue
19th Caoilin Milton
20th Shauna Tobin
21st Ciara Murphy
22nd Lauren Gilligan
24th Lisa Coleman
25th Daire Quill
26th Keeva Coveney-McKeown

In the boys’ race, again Craughwell AC athletes put in a fine performance with the finishing places as follows:-

6th Peter Martin
8th Alan Callanan
12th Sean Delaney
14th Cillian Doyle
16th Mark O’Brien
20th Conor Callaghan
23rd Cian Waters
25th Diarmuid McCartin
28th Stephen O’Connor
30th Brian Gillen
36th Oisin Keating

Special mention to Cillian Doyle in the above race, who finished high up despite a fall. Onto the U12 and older races where the team events start. In the U12 girls 1000m, Grainne McDaid stormed to individual victory in a top quality field to lead her team to 2nd place overall with a score of 25 points. Some fine performances from all on a tough hilly course:

1st Grainne McDaid
4th Tara McNally
8th Dearbhaile Walsh
12th Hannah Rabbitte
14th Caoimhe Reidy
15th Andrea Tobin
16th Aisling Coveney-McKeown
19th Eimear Loughnane
20th Orlaith Maloney

Next the U12 boys in their 1000m where a tough battle saw Oisin Doyle finish 5th and the team take the bronze medals with a points total of 45:-

5th Oisin Doyle
10th Ronan Nevin
13th Brian Loughnane
17th Andrew O’Boyle

The U14 girls 1200m race was another tough battle against a lot of top quality opposition. The Craughwell girls took the bronze medals with 61 points:- 13th Derbhla Maloney14th Gabrielle Tobin16th Siobhan Connolly

18th Allanna Ni Cheallachain
20th Ellen Fitzpatrick

The U14 boys 1500m had a right battle up from between Conor Gillen and Colm Hughes from GCH, with Conor just shading it to led the Craughwell team to victory with a very impressive performance – the club taking 6 of the top 8 places in the race:-

1st Conor Gillen
3rd Nicholas Sheehan
4th Keelan Ryan
5th Matthew Freaney

6th Cathal Reidy
8th Damien O’Boyle
12th Oisin McNally
13th Patrick Phillips

Matthew Moran battled bravely in the race but had to pull out due to illness.

The club had just 1 representative in the U16 girls 2000m where Muireann Maloney put in a strong performance to take 5th place. In the U16 boys 3000m, a strong Craughwell performance took the silver medals behind GCH. The team will build on that for the Connachts as most of the team are just returning to training after the hurling season. While I don't have time to confirm this now, I think this may have been the first time that the club has fielded an U16 boys cross country team - which is terrific progress for the club! The team were:

2nd David Concannon.
4th Finn Stoneman
7th Pádraic Tobin
8th Paul Fitzpatrick

Peadar Harvey stepped up an age to run a good race to take silver in the U18 boys 5000m, outpaced by GCH’s Jack Larkin only in the final 800m. Rachel Finnegan took 4th place in the U18 girls 3000m.

The club’s steady progress in senior athletics was rewarded at the end of the day with a fine victory in the senior men’s 10000m where we just pipped GCH to the Galway title by a solitary point. This is the first time the club have won the Galway Senior cross-country title and hopefully the first of many! The team places were:

2nd Martin Corcoran
3rd Peter O’Sullivan (and 1st Novice)
6th Johnny Lane (3rd Senior)
10th Mark Davis
14th Tom Niland (and 2nd Novice)
18th Liam Nolan
19th Gabriel Gardiner
24th Diarmuid Quill
