The club has three athletes in action in the Universities Track & Field in Athlone IT last Friday.
Maeve Curley (representing UL) retained her National title in the 1500m race walk with a strong performance to win in 6.39.31 and in the process set the record for UL in this event. Maeve has her sights set on qualification for the 20k walk in the European U23 Championships in Finland in July and the club are all rooting for her in her endevours!
Also in action on the track, Peadar Havey (representing GMIT) had a strong run in the 1500m semis to place 3rd in a time of 4.23.74 but with the race decided on time from the 2 semis, all the top 3 came from the 2nd semi.
In the field events, Cathriona Farrell (representing DCU) made her 2013 debut in the high jump, attempting to make it 4 University indoor titles in a row but had to settle for silver on this occasion. With final year exams ongoing, this was Cathriona's first time jumping in several months and remarkably she flew over the bar comfortably each time except for 1 fault at 1.61m. Clearing 1.65 on her first attempt, Cathriona was well over 1.70m but dragged it off with her heels on the first and third attempt. With UL's Sorcha Murphy having cleared each height on her first attempt but also exiting at 1.70m, the gold went to the Waterford athlete on countback. Attempting 1.70m without having jumped for 6 months underlines Cathriona's talent and it should be onwards and upwards from here (or upwards first I guess and then onwards to clear the bar!).
