A small group of athletes made the trip to AIT for the 2014 AAI Indoor Games today with some marvellous performances that saw 3 club records equalled or broken.

First into action, Katie O’Donoghue and Orla Ryan made a return to competitive action and joined Cathriona Farrell in the senior women’s high jump. Both Katie and Orla jumped well in their first competition in almost a year with both clearing 1.50m but exiting the competition at 1.55m. Cathriona continued to build on her strong recent performances (1.80 at the Galway Indoors and 1.75 at the National U23s) to clear 1.80m on her first attempt. That leap now goes down as the AIT stadium record, a nice addition to Cathriona’s list of achievements.

On the track, Paul Joyce and Damien O’Boyle both tore up the club record with super runs in heat 1 of the Senior Men’s 800m. Having run close to the 2 minutes last weekend at the National Juniors, Paul had set himself a 1.57 target today and came ever so close to that when running a fantastic time of 1.58.05 and in the process knocked over a second off the club record set last year by Nicholas Sheehan. Having run agonisingly close to breaking the 2 minute barrier on a number of occasions, it was nirvana today for Damien O’Boyle with a blistering performance to run 1.59.11 in the same heat as Paul - a club record were it not for Paul’s brilliant 1.58 in the same race. Another man edging closer to the magical 2 minute barrier, John Cormican knocked over a second off his PB when racing to a 2.02.04 and placing 6th behind Paul and Damien - very promising for a sub-2 performance before this indoor season is out.

Having lost his indoor 1500m club record to Damien last year by a fraction of second, Peadar Harvey was in no mood to watch his younger teammates tear up the record books and put in a blistering 4.05.53 to reclaim the record with an impressive performance.

Also on the track, Sarah Finnegan had good early season performances with 10.26 in the 60m hurdles and 9.92 in the triple jump.
