Well done to Declan o Leary who completed the Berlin marathon in September- a unique experience competing in the same race that Kipchoge set the world record!

Brian Matthews completed the SSE airtricity half marathon in Dublin recently earning another PB for himself this year.

Congrats to John Fitzpatrick, Kevin Mooney, Stephen Carty and Noel Gorman who completed the Charleville half marathon. John achieved a Pb in the distance with 1:26 and Stephen Carty’s Pb streak continues this year in the half marathon distance. Kevin Mooney who was 16th overall in a very competitive field now holds the club record for the half marathon distance.

Closer to home loughrea AC held their annual grey lake 10k incorporating their clubs 50th anniversary. Rena Deely, Tom Tuohy, Helena Gorman, Dan Keane and David Evans all took part in the race with great times recorded.

The Galway bay races were held last weekend and were blessed again with beautiful weather. Well done to Annemarie Shalloo who completed the 10k. Piotr Prokop, John melia, Dean Roche, David Callanan, Dan Keane, Elisha Daniels, Irene fallon, Aisling Roche, John Fitzpatrick, Colm McAllen and Brian Matthews completed the half marathon in superb times with Colm McAllen and Dean Roche securing a Pb in the distance! Kevin Mooney was first in the marathon with a fantastic time of 2:40!

On the same weekend Brian and Katie Gorman completed the Budapest marathon in very warm conditions both completing the race on the 3:47 Mark. Well done everyone- great running!

Well done to Declan O Leary who completed another Major marathon in Chicago earlier in October not long after completing Berlin- well done Declan!
Fantastic day as always at the Dublin Marathon 2018 with regards to the support, Atmosphere and organisation.
Perfect running conditions for our twenty two club members as Dublin proves to be a popular race among newbies and experienced marathon runners.
The timely start is always great in Dublin as the 20k participants are so eager just to get running after the tapering nightmare and the mind playing games in preparation for the main day.
Congratulations to all our club members who all made it across the line;

First in for the club and congrats with a new club record was Kevin Mooney in a time of 2.32:59
Seriously impressive running by Kevin who was rallied on by his family and friends.
The club are delighted for Kevin after his intensive training regime paid him dividends.
Second and third for the club were John Melia and Brian Matthews both achieving a Pb on the day!
First three ladies for club were Katie Gorman, Kay Touhy and Cathriona leen.
Fantastic running by all.
Brian and Katie Gorman rocked up and completed another marathon not long after their "hotter" marathon this month in Budapest. Great performances by both as always!
Huge congrats to all our first time marathoners from the club, everyone remembers their first!
Aideen Gillespie, Dave Callanan, Declan Craven, Treasa Callanan, Marita Carolan, Aisling Roche and Dean Roche all arriving home safe and sound.
Aideen made a comeback from a back injury in the middle of the year to complete her first marathon.
Dean and Aisling have hit the debut marathon scene hard by racking up quite a few very tough half marathons during the year.
Treasa Callanan who earned a sub four finish for her first marathon is superb accomplishment.
Dave Callanan started running last year at fit 4 life - to complete a marathon within the year is an amazing and inspirational achievement.
Kevin Mooney, Brian Matthews, John Melia, Sharon Gilligan, Fiona Gleeson and Cathriona Leen all earned impressive PBs on the day after all their hard work.
Aoife Mullane was unlucky not to get to the start line this year with a late injury after all her hard training. We have no doubt that we will see Aoife in the near future fulfilling her goal and we will be there to cheer her on!
Special mention to our neighbour Jane Ann Meehan who finished well under the 3 hour mark in 2:50.30 and finished fourth place nationally in her category. Well done Jane Ann!
Our club was also represented in the Frankfurt marathon on the same day as Dublin with Piotr Prokop coming in well under the 3hour mark.
We have all admired Piotr's pace as we witness him regularly at the 400m club track so the club are delighted for him for achieving his running goals.
Last but not least special mention to all friends and family of Craughwell AC who supported the club members along the way and on the day of the Marathon(s)!

In absolutely perfect running conditions, Kevin Mooney dug deep and delivered on his fantastic form of recent months by knocking over a whopping 4 minutes from the Club Marathon record. This corny headline had to be used at least once and this provided the perfect opportunity!!

kevin at mile 21

Kevin powering through at Mile 22

After an exceptional half-marathon in Charleville, few doubted that Kevin would break the magical 2.35 barrier, but the marathon can be a cruel beast and many fantastic athletes have stumbled at the distance over the years: "there are no guarantees here".  For many, the big question was if his legs would recover from his Galway bay marathon win (2:40) of less than a month ago - not something you often see on marathon training plans!  So basically - he still had to pull it out on the day - and pull it out he did!

Kevin started with intent, clocking out the 3:20 to 3:30 kilometers to pass through 10k in a little over 35 minutes.  He continued to push the pace, incredibly passing through half way in a remarkable 1:14.55 - a sub-2:30 pace, and ahead of many athletes that actually ended up breaking the 2:30 mark.

Through the latter stages of the second half, he started to feel the pinch - particularly over the last 10k where the uphill sections of the course took their toll.  From mile 20 to 22 his pace dipped by almost 20 seconds a kilometer.  Some abuse from fans like Barry, Gerry and myself (though more likely some downhill sections) may have helped him rally a litte from mile 22 to 24 but the last two miles were again tough - leading to a second half almost 3 minutes slower than the first.  Splits like this just indicate massive potential for improvement!

At the end his time is an unofficial 2.32.59 - a BRILLIANT personal best and a fabulous new club record which I wouldn't bet on staying this side of 2:30 for very long!  Well done to Kevin - splits are below if you click "read more".

Crew from Craughwell all Smiles at the start!

PB's too for Piotr and Others!

Kevin wasn't the only Craughwell AC Athlete in marathon action today - Piotr Prokop SHATTERED the magical 3-hour barrier in Frankfurt with a great 2:58 - well done Piotr,  it's not every day you will get a 13 minute PB - enjoy it!

Back in Dublin - only some Craughwell athletes were listed as such in the results search engine, so will add others as we get them but among the other great performances were:

  • Aisling Roche - 5:03
  • Dean Roche - 4:27
  • Elisha Daniels - 4:06
  • Colm McAllen - 4:54
  • John Melia - 3:22
  • Mick Gallagher - 4:11
  • Reena Deely - 4:19
  • Aideen Gillespie - 4:19
  • Brian Gorman 3:42
  • Katie Gorman 3:43
  • Brian Matthews 3:42
  • Cathriona Leen 3:54
  • Sharon Gilligan 4:00
  • Fiona Gleeson Keane 4:56
  • Lorraine Craven 4:18
  • Declan Craven 5:47
  • Dave Callanan 4:14
  • Treasa Callanan 3:55
  • Kay Touhy 3:54
  • Tony Nevin 3:58
  • Marita Carolan 5:24

Well done all, fantastic achievements and please let me know if I missed anyone else!

In excellent conditions in Charleville, Kevin Mooney ran a sensational PB for the half-marathon, setting a new Club Record of 1:12.01 in the process!

kevin mooney half

This is a really great time, and a major breakthrough for Kevin - just what you want one month out from his main goal of a Marathon PB in Dublin.  The signs are that in this form, Kevin will smash the current club marathon record if conditions are in any way favourable.  He already has an excellent Marathon in horrendous conditions in Boston.  Well done Kevin and best of luck in the run in to Dublin!

Full results of the Charleville half marathon are here and feature some great performances and pbs from many Galway athletes -  Kevin was still the fastest Galwayman by almost 3 minutes.!!

(It should be said that the fastest club member to have ever run a half marathon is still Gerry Ryan, but Gerry ran his sensational 64 minute national championship winning time before he joined Craughwell AC!)

Another brilliant run was from John Fitzpatrick who had a massive pb of 1.26.  Fair play guys!

* Update!  Here are Kevin's Splits for the day - how long could you run with him? :-)
