Senior Men contest Galway AAI 10k Championships
For the first time, Craughwell AC fielded a team in the the Galway 10k Road Race Championships at the weekend. The Championships were held as part of the annual Claregalway 10k race.
It was super to get a team out for this event and hopefully something that we can build on for future AAI team events, e.g. cross-country, relays etc.
Claregalway 10K on Tomorrow
The Claregalway 10K road race takes place on Saturday, 19th August at 6:00pm. The entry fee is €15, €5 of which goes to Galway Hospice. This race is the official AAI 10K road race championship, so winners get medals!
There is no need to register for this race in advance. Simply turn up and register on the day. Tom Kilgarriff's club (Claregalway AC) are the organisers of this race, and Tom will actually be taking the registrations on the day.
The race starts at 6:00pm sharp. You should aim to be there by about 5pm to give yourself enough time to register and do a warm-up.
Registration, and changing facilities will be in the Leisure Centre in Claregalway. The race is a single circuit through the countryside around Claregalway, start is at the National School (about 5 minutes jog from the Leisure Centre), finish is at the Leisure Centre. The course is pretty flat so a good one for posting a pb.
Mike is hoping to field a team, so if you do plan to attend the race, use the comment thread from this posting to let people know of your plans and to describe your experience.
Weekend Road Race Round-up
Yes the summer is finally here - another fantastic weekend of running just gone.
First-off at 11PM on Saturday morning, the Louisburgh to Westport half marathon took place. I don't remember this race from before so am not sure if it is a new race. In to my knowledge his finest performance to date, Athenry's Mick Rice powered home in an incredible 1:16:47 to take first place. This is a truly sensational time and is a breakthrough performance from the up and coming Athenry youngster. Athenry had a strong team at the race, with their next placed man, Peter Delmer taking 5th position in about 1:20. Keep an eye on AthenryAC.com for race reports.
Later on in the day, the Streets of Galway kicked off. At this premier Galway running event I was one of the T-Shirt hander-outers and got to see the finish of a race for a change.
Well done in Streets of Galway

Outstanding jumping from Jack Raftery
The club had several fine jumpers in action in both long jump and high jump in Cork IT on the final day of the National Track and Field on July 16th.
First in action was Maireád McCann in the U12 girls event and Jack Raftery and PJ Kelly in the U12 boys. Maireád can be very proud of her improvement in the long jump this summer, jumping 3.04m in the Galway competition to finish in 7th place, jumping 3.74m in the Connachts to take 3rd place and completing a massive improvement to jump 4 metres on this occasion to take 10th place in Ireland – incredible progress in such a short space of time.
