Cathriona Farrell selected for Irish team
There was super news for Cathriona Farrell and the club at the weekend when we heard of her selection by the AAI for the Irish International U16 team to contest the Celtic International track and field in Waterford on 12th August.
The Celtic Internaional is an annual event which involves top athletes from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales competing for their countries in the U16 and U18 age groups.
This competition is widely regarded as an important step in the development from promising juvenile standard to international senior standard.
Check out the following link for details of the team selection.

Surf's High in Achill
Good surfing conditions do not make for good running conditions as I discovered at the weekend in that academy of surfing that has its home at Keel in Achill. Not that I know anything about surfing!
When the Achill half-marathon was announced earlier in the year, I immediately jumped at the thought of doing it. We had holidayed in Achill for the last 4 summers and I had ran about half the course before on training runs, the easier half as it turned out. Not having had a weekend away on our own for a while, myself and Rosemarie decided we’d make a weekend of it and booked into the house that we had holidayed in.
Athenry Twilight Track & Field Preview
In yet another fantastic display of innovation and initiative from our Athenry AC neighbors, we will be treated to a night of true quality running on Saturday week.
They have arranged for some open races (5k, 1 mile for men, 3k, mile for women) that will allow ordinary runners to experience what track running is like. I hope that some Craughwell athletes will make an effort to participate. As you may know, I am out of action with achilles injury, but may just chance bringing the spikes to take some part in the festivities. After we have huffed and puffed our way around, they have arranged for some superb quality races to entertain the masses.
It's these high-quality races that will be the really interesting bit...

Good day for the Club at Day 1 of Connachts in Sligo
Craughwell AC's younger juvenile age groups had a very successful day in Sligo last Saturday (10 June), with the club featuring strongly in both relays and individual events.
With predictions of the demise of the glorious sunshine for the weekend, it was hard to know whether to bring the sun-hats or wooly hats.

Big Medal Haul at Galway Community Games
There were some fantastic performances from club athletes at the Galway Community Games finals on Sat/Sun 3/4 June. Beneath glorious sunshine at the GAA pitches in Ballinderrin, all that was missing was sea and sand as families brought blankets, picnics and sun-cream to stretch out on the grassy banks overlooking the field where the main athletics events took place.
While I don't have detailed records from the Community Games archives, it is safe to say that it was the most successful ever for the club - with athletes claiming 9 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Congratulations to all the children who took part - there was many a fine performance which didn't result in a medal but deserves equal recognition and respect.
Strong Club Performances at Schools Track and Field Finals
Several Craughwell AC athletes travelled to Tullamore at the weekend (Sat June 3rd) for the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships. This event is widely regarded as the highest standard in juvenile athletics in the country as it covers all schools north and south and draws its competitors from all sports.
The club had its highest participation level ever in this event with Sarah Finnegan (hurdles and triple jump), Cathriona Farrell (hurdles, high jump and long jump), Leah Creaven (long jump and triple jump) and Maeve Curley (1200m walk) all qualifying in individual events and Kelly O'Donoghue, Rachel Kenny and Leah Creaven qualifying as part of the Pres Athenry relay team.
