Mark’s Connemara 2006 Race Report

Mark’s Connemara 2006 Race Report

I don’t write many race reports, so please bear with me if this one is a little long winded and starts too early in proceedings, but it’s more to help me remember events than for your enjoyment.  Connemara is more event than race, so this is really an "event" report. For weeks I had been checking on the weather forecast, and things looked grim.  As the days passed, the predicted Sunday wind was adjusted up from 5mph to 14 mph,…

Craughwell Athletes Exude Class at National Indoors

Craughwell Athletes Exude Class at National Indoors

The National Juvenile Indoor Track & Field 2006 may well prove to be a watershed in the club's history. Never before had the club so many athletes taking part in the National Indoor finals and never before did we enjoy such success. This success is not just about medals won, but also the many fine performances by several of our athletes in making finals or finishing in top 5 or 6 in their event.

Fantastic Weekend For Craughwell AC

Fantastic Weekend For Craughwell AC

There were some outstanding performances from Craughwell AC athletes at the weekend taking home 2 gold and 4 silver from the National Juvenile Indoor Track and Field in Nenagh and taking 3rd place in the prestigious Connemara Half-Marathon on Sunday. Mark Davis, Tony Nevin and Tony Fitzpatrick were the club’s representatives in the half-marathon and Mark ran a stormer to take 3rd place in a time of 1:22 in very difficult weather conditions. In Nenagh, Saturday’s competition saw Paul McGill…

Golden day for Irish Athletics

Golden day for Irish Athletics

Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you will have heard that Derval O’Rourke smashed pb’s, national records and all expectations in 7.84 exhillerating seconds in Moscow on Saturday.  A fantastic achievement for her – Ireland’s only ever sprint world champion.  Looking at the race, you could be forgiven for thinking that she had come 4th, so tight was the finish, but the camera doesn’t lie and she beat off the competition on the dip.  Well done Derval from all…

A stitch in time..

A stitch in time..

We all know the feeling.  You are running in a race, and all is going pretty well though you can feel that you are pushing it.  Suddenly the familiar cramp sets in.  Somewhere around your right ribcage starts to scream at you and you need to ease up.  A stitch. Dammit. But what is a stitch? We tend to use the term all the time but it seems the stitch is in the realm of the hiccup in that it’s…

Irish team have it all to do in Moscow

Irish team have it all to do in Moscow

In frosty Moscow, Ireland’s finest indoor athletes are competing today against the best in the world. We have fielded a good team, but we will be doing very well to come home with a medal out of this championship. Despite losing out on his lottery funding, Tullamore man James Nolan seems to have really knuckled down since the Olympics (maybe Jerry Keirnan’s criticism was a motivator).  He will be one to watch, posting superb times this year including a 3K of 7:52…
