Elation and Heartbreak at National Juvenile Finals

Elation and Heartbreak at National Juvenile Finals

The first weekend of the National Juvenile Track & Field finals took place in Nenagh on Saturday and Sunday. As usual, it provided plenty of thrills and heartbreak as our athletes battled it out with the best in the country.  Aidan Conneely was the club’s star performer at the weekend with gold and silver medals in the long jump and 60m – but it was not the expected combination of medals based on provincial performances. We knew Aidan was up…

Ireland’s cheapest race in Galway on Saturday!

Ireland’s cheapest race in Galway on Saturday!

In these recessionary times it’s great to see value for money. One of the best value races around has to be the inaugral Celtic100 which is taking place in the prom in Salthill on Saturday. This race is 30 euro to enter – however if you don’t think that’s cheap you just need to see the distance. It’s actually an incredible 100K race which involves running a 1 kilometer stretch in the prom approximately 100 times over and back! What…

Athletes Excel in Community Games Cross Country

Athletes from the club had a fantastic performance in the Galway Community Games cross-country which were held on Sunday 22nd March in the Palace Grounds in Tuam. The club had representatives there from the parishes of Craughwell, Ardrahan, Athenry, Clarinbridge, Kilnadeemna and Oranmore. We were missing athletes from Carabane this year … unfortunately due to administrative complexities that are part and parcel of Community Games.   There were many fine displays of running both at the front and the back of…

That unforgettable day when a Sligo athlete took on Europe’s finest

Check out Ray Flynn's regular weekly Running Shoes column in the Sligo Weekender newspaper at:  http://www.sligoweekender.ie/news/story/?trs=mhqlgbidey I've stolen his headline but I'm sure the Sligo Weekender won't mind. And I'm glad to see that my own home place Tourlestrane gets a mention in the same article :-)

Listening to this and looking at the stats which back it up, you’d think that irish records are here to stay, or at least won’t be beaten in this “fun-running” generation. Well luckily we have a very exciting crop of young stars at the top of Irish running that…

Join run Johnny run as he …runs!!

I got an email this week from an old schoolmate of mine – Johnny Donnelly, former sawdoctors drummer and very active member of the drama and music scene around Galway.  As you might know he has undertaken a massive challenge to raise money and awareness for the Seachange Foundation.  The challenge is to run a massive 60 marathons in 4 years.  A tremendous task for anyone.  Even by the time he was in first year in secondary school Johnny was…
