Galway/South Connacht Secondary Schools Track & Field

Galway/South Connacht Secondary Schools Track & Field

The 1st round of the schools track & field took place today in Dangan in some of the worst conditions I’ve seen for a track & field meet.  The day started off looking like the weather would be ok, after an hour the drizzle started, an hour later it had stepped up to a shower, an hour later it has stepped up to a downpour, an hour later the downpour continued. It was unending for almost 5 hours and then when…

Soldiers return as Galway 5k Series off to a great start

Soldiers return as Galway 5k Series off to a great start

Winner looked like this but skinnier! The organisation was immaculate as usual from host club Athenry AC and I have to say I was very impressed with the course this year.  I know it's the same course as every other year, but the fast finish and long straight made for some really good racing conditions.  There really isn't any hill that  I noticed.  The weather was amazing – the best I've ever seen for running – so still and perfect temperature. …

Disappointment for Thornton in Hamburg

Disappointment for Thornton in Hamburg

Top Galway runner Gary Thornton of GCH made his marathon debut in Hamburg last weekend as part of a strong irish team.  Many of us were really looking forward to see how Gary's speed would translate to the marathon distance.  Unfortunately from looking at the result it doesn't seem to have worked out for Gary on this occasion – the splits on the website for him only go to half-way indicating that he had an injury or some other trouble:…

Craughwell 5k Returning soon

Mark a date in your calendar..!  Craughwell AC is returning to its roots with a gut bursting 5k on the traditionally fastest 5k route in the Galway series..!  And as is Galway 5k Series tradition, it will take place on Tuesday evening – this time on September 2nd.  As you all know, the club has taken another big plunge this year in expanding facilities which will hopefully be an asset to athletics in Galway for many generations.  All of the…

Kilcornan 8km Challenge Run

Kilcornan 8km Challenge Run

On the 10th of May 2009 the Predator Triathlon Club will be holding their first event of 2009. Normally the club organises a Duathlon in early March. We have been unable to hold one this year as the ongoing construction of the new N6 has meant that our route is not available.   This year we have decided to put on a running race as most of our club members take part in local running events and are…

National 10k Road Race 26th April Navan

National 10k Road Race 26th April Navan

Sunday 26th April at 2:00 PM in Navan sees one of the most popular road races of the year.  The national 10k road race championship has a strong history of Galway performances – most notably by Gerry Ryan and Paul McNamarra who are both multiple winners.  It is also a fun event for the rest of us as anyone who took part in last years run in April will testify. Unfortunately I am crocked so won't be able to make…

McCarthy and Gillick win Mt Sacs

McCarthy and Gillick win Mt Sacs

If anyone watched the Euro Indoors you will have seen a young red-headed irish athlete called David McCarthy strongly lead the 800m, only to fade in the last lap. I watched the euro’s and was a bit dissapointed as though he was good, I’d heard a lot about David McCarthy and expected even more. What I didn’t realise was that there are actually two top irish athletes of this name! The young David McCarthy that runs for providence is proving…
