Irish Schools Senior Title for Cathriona Farrell

Irish Schools Senior Title for Cathriona Farrell

A number of athletes travelled to Tullamore today for the finals of the Irish Schools track & field. This is the preeminent track and field competition in juvenile athletes and you can see from a report on the AAI website that it was one of the best and toughest competitions ever with numerous records been broken.   Craughwell had many fine performances but a few to single out were Maeve Curley's breathtaking finish in the 2k race walk to take…

Marathon Madness this weekend!

Marathon Madness this weekend!

Marathons only really happen twice a year – in Spring and Autumn.  This weekend sees the last of the spring Marathons with both Cork and Edinburgh on.  Okay okay – there is also the womens mini-marathon on as well.    It looks like these races are going to be run in the most idyllic of conditions, and there are many people from Craughwell and Galway running in them. Here are just a couple of names to look out for in the…

Drama and Jubilation at National Community Games Cross Country

Drama and Jubilation at National Community Games Cross Country

Athlone IT was host to the 2009 National Community Games finals at the weekend, with the athletics interest being the eagerly awaited cross-country finals. This was the first time that the National finals were held outside their long-time home in Mosney and undoubtedly had some teething difficulties – but overall it seemed to be a great success and certainly the facilities in the college were far superior and more comfortable than their equivalents in Mosney.   It will take a…

Glory for Loughrea as Olive finishes 4th

Glory for Loughrea as Olive finishes 4th

In the week that Loughrea AC hosts its 5k leg of the Galway Series, there was more good news as club member Olive Loughnane finished 4th in the European race walking championships, just 25 seconds off a bronze medal.  The standard in this championships was up there with the olympics and world champs and cements Olive's reputation as one of the very top race walkers in the world. http://www.metz2009.fr/2nd_language/results20kmF.html Brilliant stuff! Congratulations to Olive from all at Craughwell AC.

I can't wait for this!!  The European Cross Country is on in Santry, Dublin on December 13th.  Mark it in your diary!  The tickets are now for sale on ticketmaster but don't go buying them yet as any AAI members get really decent discounts and we will receive the details soon in the post which I'll relay here. Good Luck Galway Community Games Cross Country Teams!

Good Luck Galway Community Games Cross Country Teams!

Five Galway teams travel to Athlone tomorrow to take part in the National finals of the Community Games cross-country. This is the first time that the event has taken place outside of its ancestral home of Mosney and the first time in recent years that none of the Galway cross-country teams have stayed onsite in the camp.   Hopefully none of the Galway competitors will suffer any withdrawal symptoms from the experience of not being in Mosney – it’s hard to…

Galway Senior T&F Series June 2009

The last couple of years has seen the Galway senior track & field championships held in an exciting new format over three Thursday evenings in Dangan. The new format, which was an initiative of Regional Development Officer Paul McNamara, worked brilliantly with greatly improved particpation in the last two years. The format will be much the same again this year and details have been provided by Paul in the attached flyer. Its an opportunity for people to get a PB over…

Another Glorious night in Claregalway

Another Glorious night in Claregalway

Fifty Seven Craughwell club members made the short trip to Claregalway on Tuesday evening for another night of fun and pain.  Incredibly it was another beautiful evening.   Looking through the results there were some special performances all round – the highlight for me was Tom Niland's performance in getting under the 18 minute barrier.  I wasn't at the race myself but I heard that Andy and the lads in Claregalway did an excellent job of organising things and the new…

Craughwell 5k Race Video 2009

Craughwell 5k Race Video 2009

All eyes are on Claregalway for the next leg of the Galway series! I hope I’m wrong but based on the forecast this could well be the first wet 5k we’ve had in the series. In the meantime you can try to spot yourself in this year’s Craughwell race video. Viewing tip: if your connection isn’t the fastest press play and then pause immediately and give it a while to load on your computer before pressing play again (sound recommended).

Quantity and Quality in Craughwell 5k 2009 – final results

Quantity and Quality in Craughwell 5k 2009 – final results

Had some nasty suspicions that the fine evening might bring out the fair weather runners, but were bowled over by the crowd of over 475 that participated this evening.!!  We hope you all had as enjoyable a run as possible over our pretty testing course. As anyone who finished between 26 and 27 minutes will have noticed, we found the numbers challenging to cope with at times but luckily we have a good video so will be able to get…
