Multiple Victories at the Connacht Schools Track & Field

Multiple Victories at the Connacht Schools Track & Field

Athlone IT was the venue for the Connacht Secondary Schools Track and Field on Wednesday. It was my first visit to the impressive new track there – it’s great to have another track on our doorstep (well almost on our doorstep, if it were this side of Loughrea it would be handier :-)). It’s a fantastic facility and a huge credit to Ciarán Ó Catháin and his colleagues at Athlone IT for their achievement in providing such a fine athletics…

Order of Malta row in to help Craughwell 5k

Order of Malta row in to help Craughwell 5k

The newly formed Craughwell branch of the Order of Malta have generously offered sponsorship of tonights event by providing full ambulance cover.  This is FANTASTIC news as all money raised is going to Juvenille Athletics in the county.  The order of Malta is providing a fabulous and very valuable service in the local community – both for events like this and also in providing vital activities, skills and interests to kids and teenagers.  We are very grateful to them in their support…

IMPORTANT NOTES for CRAUGHWELL LEG OF THE GALWAY 5K SERIES 12th May 09.

IMPORTANT NOTES for CRAUGHWELL LEG OF THE GALWAY 5K SERIES 12th May 09.

Read carefully; please take heed it’s in your interest: Registration is open to ALL on the night (5 euro which like the rest of the series money goes straight to the County board for Juvenille Athletics).  Since we mostly have bigger numbers than the other races, it's vital that you move quickly along the chute at the end to get your number taken down or you'll mess up the race for others.  It's hard to remember to do this when…

Monica Joyce: New World Record!

Monica Joyce: New World Record!

Sticking with the theme of 5k's for the month that's in it, consider irish olympian Monica Joyce.  Never heard of her..?  That's because she's 50 years old and competed for Ireland in LA in 1984!!  A couple of weeks ago she absolutely shattered the Womens world record for 5k running a superb 16:19 in mt Sacs, beating the previous record by a minute!  There aren't too many people male or female of any age in Galway that could post such a time. Sensational stuff…

“Oh don’t take me picture” – Newcastle pictures online

Just noticed that the pictures from Craughwell resident and Galway's finest athletics photographer Johnny O'Connor are are online at the Athenry website.  They load quite slow for me but as always they are well worth checking out.  Pain makes for great expressions!  If anyone has a good caption for the one below please post a comment!

Strong Performances at U12-19 Track & Field

Strong Performances at U12-19 Track & Field

Back to Dangan on Sunday for the 2nd day of the Galway track and field championships. This was the 2nd time in 5 days that most of these athletes were competing in Dangan, having competed at the Secondary Schools track and field earlier in the week. Thankfully the atrocious weather of last Wednesday did not rear its stormy head again and other than two short sharp showers, we escaped the punishment dished out on Wednesday. With over 80 athletes from…

Craughwell AC’s Youngest Athletes Shine in Dangan

Craughwell AC’s Youngest Athletes Shine in Dangan

The sun shined on Dangan last Saturday for the Galway U9-11 track and field championships. With all the mixed weather lately, we were lucky to have a fine day, particularly for the young age groups as it can be a very negative experience for them on a wet day. Craughwell AC’s younger athletes did us proud on the day. We had by far the largest attendance with 70+ participants and had a very successful day with 30 teams qualifying for…

Cragg wins Stanford in 13:22

Cragg wins Stanford in 13:22

To get you in the mood for tonights 5k – it’s always good to see Irish athletes doing well and Cragg ran well to win the prestigous invitational in Stanford on saturday. The time was good – 13:22 – almost 7 seconds faster than the time Coughlan won the World 5k in Helsinki. This was despite a very slow middle third which meant they had to go a bit nuts in the final third of the race.
