Rotterdam Record for Whitlock

Rotterdam Record for Whitlock

I often talk about this guy but Canadian Ed Whitlock ran the Rotterdam marathon last weekend and is still going strong.  At 80 years of age he just posted a pretty awesome 3:25 marathon age world record. Whitlock has been mopping up the age-related records for decades.  Below are the ones since he turned 70.  For me, the 2:54 at 72 years of age is the most amazing in that bunch, though the sub-40 10k over 75 could also qualify!!:…

Coole Running!

Coole Running!

Well done to everyone that completed the Connemarathon or the BUPA great Ireland Run today.  I believe the heat was pretty intense in the phoenix park.  special mention to club chairman Tony Nevin who competed the 39.3 mile Ultra Marathon in Connemara in a great time of under 6 hours.   Coole Park is a fantastic place to go for a run at any time and next Sunday there is a 10k race being held there in aid of the Ardrahan…

McMillans Best 10K workout

McMillans Best 10K workout

An interesting article up here by Greg McMillan.  Thanks to Shels4ever on boards for noticing it.  .  McMillan has coached plenty of elites including Ireland's Martin Fagan, Scotland's Andrew Lemonchello among many others.  His website has tons of good running articles including the famous running calculator that's in every runners list of favourites.  His premise is that you should aim to run 3×2 mile repeats with 5-minute recovery jogs at your target 10k pace 10-2 weeks before the race and you…

Third largest juvenile membership in Ireland!

Third largest juvenile membership in Ireland!

With the culmination of the indoor track and field season last weekend, eyes will now turn to a busy outdoor season which kicks off with the secondary schools track & field next Wednesday and is quickly followed by a succession of schools, club and community games outdoor events between now and end July. With official juvenile membership at 283 at the end of March, remarkably the club have the third largest juvenile section in Ireland – behind two big city…

Race with Ray a big success

Race with Ray a big success

Nothing like a celebrity to pull in a crowd!  Over 700 runners lined up for the chance to race with Ray D'Arcy of Today FM.  Well done to all the club members that took part in the daytime run.  The event was won by Matt Bidwell, followed by our own Peter O'Sullivan.  I also believe that Tony Nevin was among the top 10 finishers.  I haven't heard the times yet but no doubt they will be up soon.  I…

Good Performances at National Relays

Good Performances at National Relays

The club had 9 teams taking part in the National relays on Sunday and even though there was no silverware on this occasion, all teams performed to the best of their ability – improving their times from the Connacht finals and in some cases setting club records. Because the indoors is on a 4-lane track, it’s very difficult to make it to the finals – with the heats decided on the fastest 4 teams. Pictured above are the U17 girls…

Craughwell the next generation in Quilty 2011

Craughwell the next generation in Quilty 2011

Quilty is a beautiful seaside town in County Clare wtih an incredibly historic running tradition.  Its 4-mile classic road race has been in operation for far longer than the Dublin Marathon.  Last year Craughwell ran it with one of the best teams we ever fielded and came 3rd team out of 100 runners.  More or less that same team went to Dublin to run the National 10k in Phoenix Park and came first in the vets and would have been…

Circuit Training finished until september

Circuit Training finished until september

When the hour changes, there is usually a fall off in the numbers for circuits and it was the same again on Monday last.  For that reason we decided to call it a day after the 11 week session,  circuit training will be resuming again in September.  Keep up the training and have a great summer!

Conor Gillen and Maria McNamara Continue Fine Indoor Season!

Conor Gillen and Maria McNamara Continue Fine Indoor Season!

The third day of the National juvenile indoor track & field championships saw Conor Gillen and Maria McNamara continue a fine indoor season by taking bronze in the U16 boys 800m and silver in the U17 girls high jump. For both Conor and Maria, their medals today are richly deserved as they are two of the hardest working athletes in the club – training 3 times a week consistently almost every week since last September and sometimes more often.

The race is on to represent Ireland in 2012 Marathon.

The race is on to represent Ireland in 2012 Marathon.

Sean Connolly was mentioned in an interesting article in today's Irish Independent – less than two weeks after setting his excellent new Craughwell 10 course record.  He is part of a contingent of Irish lads looking to achieve the target time for the 2012 London Marathon.  I think Galway's gary Thornton should be in that list too as when he's "on" he's better than most of the lads mentioned! "Hooper coaches Sean Connolly, who is first into the fray in Rotterdam on April…
