Craughwell's U16 boys team battled bravely at the National Cross Country Championships today in Sligo where they had their best ever team performance yet at this level  to finish in 4th place in the team competition. O’Sullivan and Corcoran Help Ireland to Victory!

O’Sullivan and Corcoran Help Ireland to Victory!

Peter O'Sullivan put in a stellar performance in Glasgow today at the British and Irish International Masters Cross Country team event. Peter placed 13th in the M35 age group, helping Ireland to team victory by a single point ahead of the host nation Scotland. Martin Corcoran ran a fine race also to place 11th in the M45 race, finishing 5th of the Irish runners – a performance which gave Ireland 2nd place in the team event. With the scores of…

In their bare feet

In their bare feet

Mick Rice is well known to anyone involved in Galway running over the past 7 or 8 years.  His latest project is a book on the history of legendary local club Derrydonnell AC and is launching next Friday night.  I think in many ways Derrydonnell AC can be a great example to Craughwell AC in that it proved that a small village CAN compete with the best in the country if all things go well, and the story is all…

Kingpins (and Queenpins!) of Connacht

Kingpins (and Queenpins!) of Connacht

U13 Boys – Connacht Champions 2011! A series of powerful performances saw Craughwell AC bring home 5 Connacht team titles and 2 individual titles from an incredible day of cross country action in Ballinamore. It was the club’s best ever day out at a cross country championships. Having ran this course in atrocious conditions in 2009, our teams were pleasantly surprised by the course on this occasion (well 1 or 2 commented on the soft underfoot conditions but it was…

Food for Thought on Childhood Obesity

Food for Thought on Childhood Obesity

Interesting article in today's Irish Independent … "A QUARTER of Irish nine-year-olds are overweight with a disturbing trend towards obesity, according to a new report on the issue." We are lucky in Craughwell that children have such a range of sports competing for their attention but it would be worthwhile if parents had a read of the article and the ERSI report it refers to. One thing I notice in the athletics club is that we have huge participation around…

Back to Ballinamore! (updated)

Back to Ballinamore! (updated)

Dig out the wellingtons as its back to Ballinamore in County Leitrim next Sunday for day 2 of the Connacht cross country. Ballinamore must be just about the most difficult place in Connacht to get to from Craughwell – with no direct route, lots of small roads and a 2.5 hour journey. The first race of the day will be the girls U11 which kicks off at 1pm sharp. For those new to Connacht cross-country, sharp means sharp – the…

Charting Our Cross Country Progress

Charting Our Cross Country Progress

After a great day last Saturday, I just thought I’d pull out the performances of two of our athletes in the U16 boy’s 4000m. Jamie Spellman and Matthew Moran have been regular participants in many cross-country seasons since a young age. On Saturday both had their best ever cross country performances at Connacht level. Read on for their progress to this point from earlier years.

Craughwell Power to Victory in Connacht Cross Country

Craughwell Power to Victory in Connacht Cross Country

It was another day to remember for the club at the Connacht Cross Country Championships in Sligo – with both young and not-so-young athletes racing to some fantastic performances and bringing home 1 individual Connacht title, 3 team titles, a team silver and 3 individual bronze. The club travelled in small numbers to Sligo racecourse for this the first day of the Connacht Cross Country Championships – but showed plenty of grit and quality to emerge as one of the leading…

Connaught Gold In Sligo

Connaught Gold In Sligo

Saturday saw the even ages and Senior Connaught Cross Country take place in Sligo Racecourse.   There were again plenty of great results from Craughwell athletes of all ages – I'll leave the coverage of the Juvenille races to Mike who has a lot more detail.  If like me you associate Cross Country with rain and pain,  you would have been only half right on Saturday.  The conditions were amazing and I've never seen Sligo look so well.  Even at…
