Cummin Clancy, Galway’s First Olympian RIP

Cummin Clancy, Galway’s First Olympian RIP

Galway’s first Olympic athlete has passed away aged 90 in the US. Cummin Clancy represented Ireland in the discus in the 1948 Olympics. Its probably not well known amongst current generations of athletes so I thought I’d post some details here. He was honoured at the Galway Sports Star Awards in 2009.  Following is from an Irish Times article from last year. May he rest in peace.

Good Luck Olive – always a class act Driving into work this morning, I heard the news that arguably the greatest ever Galway Athlete is retiring today.  Loughrea AC’s Olive Loughnane competed in an incredible four Olympic Games (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012) and five World Championships.  Perhaps the highlight of her career was her awesome Silver Medal in the 2009 Berlin World Championships, a day that will live long in the memory of those that saw the 33 year old…

It started at the community hall and looped around and out the picturesque tawin peninsula then  finished back at the community hall , it is easy to see why this area is classed a special area of conservation with its benthic vegetation and algae decorated stony  water edges…
