There was a fantastic silver medal for Conor Penney at the National Senior Championships with flawless first time clearances of 1.90 1.95 2.00 2.05 in miserable wet conditions in Santry. And three super efforts at what would have been a new PB of 2.10m, which on a dryer day would have been clear. The standard of Irish female 400m running has never been higher, but Craughwell Sprint legend SinĂ©ad Treacy managed to earn her slot at the top table yet…
The prestigious Tailteann Games took place in Santry last Saturday with some exceptional performances from members of the club while representing their schools. The event is an inter-provincial schools competition with the top U16/17 athletes selected from each province based on their performances in earlier schools and club competitions. It is also a qualifier for the SIAB international between Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. There were top-drawer performances right across the board from the club’s athletes with Lauren Kilduff (Gort…
Craughwell AC’s youngest competitors took to the track in Tullamore at day 1 of the All-Irelands with many super performances, none more so that Aaron Burke who took a fantastic silver medal in the U12 boys shot putt with a massive throw of 9.69 on his 2nd effort. Our U12 throwers were in amazing form with Gerard Murray claiming bronze in the turbo javelin with a fine throw of 28.55 with Aaron Burke close behind in 4th place with a…

It was Kilchreest’s first time taking part, great to have another school joining the action! The club had another remarkable series of performances at the Connacht U14 to Seniors Track and Field Championships which were held in Athlone at the weekend. Conor Penney put in yet another incredible performance to better the 2m barrier for the third time this year, clearing 2.02m to take the Connacht U17 High Jump title and in the process set a new Connacht record, eclipsing the 2m jump leaped by the club’s own Jerry Keary back in 2016. The club…
Saturday evening was slightly muggy and breezy for the 2024 Dunshaughlin road race. Dunshaughlin is probably the highest standard 10km road race in Ireland and this year was no exception with over 230 runners breaking the magical 40 minute barrier. This was my first time running the course and I was impressed with the route if not quite my performance! It starts off quickly with a sweeping downhill start and mostly flat first 5km. In the 2nd half you have…

The highlight of the Schools Athletics year took place last weekend in the hugely entertaining All-Ireland Schools Track and Fields finals in Tullamore and there were some extraordinary results from the Connacht Athletes. The star of the weekend from a Craughwell and Galway perspective was Luke O’Sullivan representing Clarin College Athenry. Luke took up the steeplechase this season and was a dominant winner in the Intermediate Boys 1500m Steeplechase on Friday evening. Luke won his first National title and medal…
