Laura Cunningham’s good form in the long jump continued this weekend with a leap of 5.03m to come within a whisker of making the final 8 in the women’s long jump at the National Senior Track & Field Championships in Santry. The blustery conditions were not helpful to the jumpers, with most back a little from their personal bests. Normally a trailing wind would help the jumps but not on this occasion as the wind was coming and going, making it difficult to judge the takeoff mark.

It was Laura’s second competition this month to go over the magical 5m mark having leaped 5.23 earlier this month in the Connacht Senior Track & Field in Dangan and tees her up nicely for an attempt at the club outdoor record of 5.44m held by Sinead Treacy. The 5m mark in women’s long jump is a tough barrier to surpass for most athletes with 11 athletes having done so since 2005.
