Another Record and National Title for Cathriona
The records continue to fall for Cathriona Farrell, who was in action at the Irish Universities Track & Field in Santry at the weekend. Joining the competition at 1.65m and jumping superbly with first time clearances over 1.65, 1.70 and 1.75m, Cathriona claimed victory with her 1.75 jump to smash her college's (DCU) old record of 1.70m. Cathriona then had 3 strong attempts at 1.80m, coming close on her final attempt but fractionally too close to the bar at takeoff. Former record holder Leona Byrne of DCU came 2nd with 1.70m, while Athenry and NUIG's Claire McNamara came 3rd with 1.60m.
Also in action, William Finnegan representing NUIG came 3rd in the Combined Events with a points total of 2338 points – hurdles 18.95, 1500m 5:27.10, high jump 1.60m, long jump 6.01m, shot putt 9.13m; while Sarah Finnegan also represresenting NUIG came 4th in the Combined Events with 2280 points – hurdles 17.67, 800m 2:45.43, high jump 1.35m, long jump 4.70m, shot putt 6.55m.
