Athletes at the top in Galway Community Games finals

Athletes at the top in Galway Community Games finals

The club had many fine performances in the Galway Community Games finals recently in Ballinderrin. Each year, more and more athletes from the club are featuring amongst the medal winners in this event. Its a sign of the club's progress since this competition has a much broader representation from across the county than the Galway athletics club competition – as many areas don't have an athletics club and thus don't get to participate.

The following are the results from the club's athletes. Apologies for missing out on many athletes as I left it too late to write this report and its not as fresh as it should be in my mind!

U12 girls ball throw: Tara McNally threw superbly to take the silver medal.

Hurdles: The club had 3 athletes in 4th placed positions in the finals – Dylan Finn 4th in U10 boys 60m hurdles, Ashling Keady 4th in the U10 girls 60m hurdles and brendan Gallagher 4th in the U14 boys 80m hurdles.

U15 Mixed Relay: The Craughwell team of Pádraic Tobin, Ashley McDonnell, Katie O'Donoghue and Shaun Gallagher (with brother Brendan as sub on this occasion) ran a very strong race to comfortably take the gold medal. Sarah Helebert's Gort team took the silver medals.

U8 Girls 60m: Rachel Hannify ran the race of her life to take the silver medal in the final, with Aoife Raftery also making it into the final.

U10 Girls 100m: Michelle Duggan ran a very good race to finish in 4th place, just missing out on 3rd by a whisker.

U12 Boys 100m: Aidan Conneely ran his usual brillant race to nick the gold medal on the line from his regular rival Colin Cotton from Ballinasloe. A super performance for Aidan considering he is young enough for this race again next year.

U14 Girls 100m: Maireád McCan ran strongly to make the final, finishing 4th or 5th a year out of her age.

U10 Boys 200m: Liam Forde had a convincing win in the 200m, coasting to a 10m victory from lane 1.

U10 Girls 200m: A fantastic run from Grainne McDaid earned her the silver medal in the final, missing the gold by a tiny margin. Eating up the ground on the leading athlete over the final 30 metres, if this was a 205m race, the gold belonged to Grainne!

U12 Boys 600m: Nicholas Sheehan ran a great race to take the silver medal. Leading the whole way around until the final bend, Nicholas battled hard and held on for 2nd place. Many of his clubmates also made the final, including Jamie Spelman, David Byrne and Keelan Ryan.

U14 Girls 800m: Probably the highlight of the weekend for the club, Linda Porter, Orla McDaid and Muireann Maloney all lined out in the final. Linda led the race from the start, with Orla and Muireann hanging onto the end of the leading group of 6 for the first lap. As the race entered the last 400m, Linda started to pull away from Michelle Maher (Salthill) in 2nd place. Linda built up a considerable lead of perhaps 40m over the final 300m to win in style. Meanwhile Orla had moved up from the back of the pack with 200m to go and moved into 3rd place as they rounded the last bend. Making up a gap of 6m in the home straight, Orla pulled level with the Salthill athlete with about 30m to go. A ferocious battle ensued over the last 30m as each athlete gave it their very best to edge ahead. But on the final stride, Orla edged into the lead to take the silver by less than half a metre. A fantastic race.

U10 mixed relay: The Craughwell team put in a spendid performance right through the heats, semis and final and took 4th place in the final, narrowly missing out on medals. The team were Michell Duggan, Cillian Dolan, Grainne McDaid, Ian Connolly, Adam Small and Erin Fitzpatrick.

U12 girls relay: Dandy Murray ran a super 4th leg for the Ardrahan relay team to win silver medals. The Craughwell team of Ellen Treacy, Ellen Fitzpatrick, Gabrielle Tobin, Tara Keady and Emma Byrne also ran very well and finished in 5th place in the final.

U12 boys relay: Aidan Conneely led his Ballinderrin team to silver medals. Craughwell also made the final with their team of Oisin Coppinger, Shane Finn, Conor O'Donoghue, Conor Duggan and Keelan Ryan.

U14 girls relay: The Craughwell team of Debi Kenny, Orla McDaid, Mairead McCan and Caoimhe Quill had a super run through the heats, semis and final to take silver medals in the final against a strong Claregalway team.

U16 boys relay: Ardrahan took the gold medals with 3 members of the team from the club – Tomas Keehan, Ruairi Finnegan and Kyle McCrann.

U14 boys long jump: Super jumping saw PJ Kelly take the gold, with Oisin McNally 3rd and Cormac Dillon 4th.

U14 girls long jump: An outstanding competition saw Claire Ryder and Debi Kenny tie at the top with their best jumps, with Claire declared winner by virtue of her 2nd best jump been better than Debi's 2nd best. Ella Bryan took 4th place.

U16 girls high jump: Ashley McDonnell continued her remarkable success in Community Games to take the gold medal ahead of Sarah Helebert in 2nd and Orla Ryan in 4th. This is rumoured to be the 12th time Ashley has made it to Mosney – U10 girls 200m in 2003, U12 girls cross country in 2003, 2004 and 2005, U13 girls cross country in 2006, U14 girls cross country in 2007, U12 girls 600m in 2005, U14 girls 800m in 2006 and 2007, U16 girls choir in 2004 … the list goes on!!

U16 boys high jump: Tomas Keehan took the gold medal ahead of Niall rooney in 2nd place.

So a great weekend for club athletes and for many, another trip to Mosney later in the year.
