Athletics Ireland Star Award for Evan Hallinan!

Athletics Ireland Star Award for Evan Hallinan!

Congratulations to Evan Hallinan who received his Athletics Ireland Star Award at the weekend at the awards ceremony in the Mullingar Park Hotel. Every year, Athletics Ireland pick the most successful athlete in each county for these awards from their performances that year – selecting from the U14 to U19 age groups based on the number of medals won in the National Juvenile Championships for indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and cross country. Evan is pictured above with mum and coach Helen and with coach Mike Tobin.

Evan’s huge haul of medals from 2023 almost guaranteed him selection with triple gold in the National U19 Indoor Championships in high jump, long jump and triple jump and double gold in the National U19 Outdoor Championships in high jump and long jump and silver in the triple jump. And it wasn’t just there that the medal winning stopped – with gold in the National U20 Indoor High Jump and Long Jump and gold in the Irish Schools Senior High Jump and silver in the long jump. A truly remarkable series of achievements and probably the largest haul of National medals in the club’s history by an individual athlete in a single year. And even more remarkably Evan achieved all of this despite struggling with injury for much of 2023, having to miss the National U20 Outdoor Track & Field and then tearing his hamstring during his final competition of the summer. Evan is pictured below receiving his award from Amanda Hynes (Chairperson of the AAI Juvenile Committee) and John Cronin (President of Athletics Ireland).

It’s a very difficult award to win given the strength of athletics in County Galway and that it up against all athletes from 6 age groups and both girls and boys. Evan joins a small elite group of athletes from the club who have won this award in the past, joining Conor Penney (2022), Laura Cunningham (2018), Sinead Treacy (2015) and Cathriona Farrell (2008).
