August in Galway = Road Race Central!

August in Galway = Road Race Central!

2007 has already been an amazing year for Galway senior running – with more races and more participation than most people can remember for many years!  To top it off, the county has had some great distance running success with Gary Thornton winning the national track 10k and the awesome Gerry Ryan winning the huge Irish Runner 5-miler in Phoenix park.

Traditionally, the Galway running calendar only got going in August, and this month still has the premier events for road runners in the county.

We already had the enjoyable Headford 8k last Saturday, which had only a couple of Craughwell entrants.  However the big events are to come:

1. Future Streets of Galway 8K, Saturday 11th August 19:30
For details see: http://www.galwaycityharriers.com.  This is definitely the main event in the Galway road racing calendar, attracting the biggest turnout and the highest quality elites.

2. Claregalway 10k, Saturday 25th August 18:00
This race is most people's target to achieve the elusive 10k pb.  It is a pretty flat, accurate course and if the wind is favourable, you can definitely push out your limits on this evening.  As a bonus, it is the County Galway 10K championship, so there might be an AAI medal for you at the end of it!!

It would be great if the club could get teams together for these events, so if you are entering the races, please make sure to put Craughwell as your club.

There is another event sandwiched in betwen these two on the 18th of August, which might be an ideal part of your training for the Claregalway – the Connemara Breakfast Run, is a charity run in aid of Juvenille athletics in Galway.  It is 35 euro to enter, which includes bus transport to the venue and a free breakfast.  ALL of the entry fee goes to supporting Juvenille athletics in county Galway.  For details on how to register check http://www.runireland.com .  It would also be great if we could get some Craughwell athletes to support this worthy venture.
