It is with extreme sadness that the club heard of the recent death of Bridie Farrell. As many will know Bridie is mum to the club’s most decorated athlete Cathriona and was a colossal force in Cathriona’s athletics career, travelling all over Ireland to athletics competitions and then to many events in the UK and the European Youth Championships in Finland. Subject to getting enough volunteers to commence our new youngest age group, Craughwell AC will be starting its youngest training group on Thursdays at 5.30pm for children born in 2020, commencing on Thursday 17th September. Several of the club’s athletes represented County Galway with distinction at the weekend in the Round 1 of the National League in Tullamore with some fine performances to help the country qualify for the August finals with a 3rd place finish in the Women’s competition and 2nd place in the Men’s. Craughwell AC’s athletes delivered a dominant performance at the recent Connacht Relays for the older juvenile age groups. The club’s U17 Girls raced to the Connacht title in their 4x100m in a time of 52.47 with Aisling Lavan, Isabelle Power, Laoise Scully, Faye Whelan and Adele Casserly. Another brilliant day of athletics for Craughwell AC took place at the weekend at day 2 of the Connacht Championships held at ATU Sligo. Killian Burke and Grace Drysdale led the way with each taking double Connacht titles. Killian excelled in the U17 throws, heaving the shot putt out to 9.38m for the gold and doing likewise in the Discus with a huge throw of 22.25m. Another super day of action at the Irish Schools Track & Field Championships in Tullamore with the performance of the day coming from Darragh Kelly (Clarin College) in the Senior Boys High Jump with a 1.89m leap for victory and the coveted Irish Schools High Jump Cup.
