The 2012 Christy Kennedy Sports had possibly its largest participation ever last week with 5 primary schools taking part from the locality – Ballymana, Carrabane, Coldwood, Craughwell and Killeeneen. It was great to see Coldwood NS involved again after a number of years of absence. Congratulations to Ballymana NS who won the Christy Kennedy Shield after a long number of years of domination by Craughwell NS and well done also to Carrabane NS who took 2nd place with some fine performances. It was a tightly fought battle between the schools with Ballymana easing ahead at the end with some strong relay performances and a closely fought contest for 2nd place with only 6 points seperating Carrabane, Craughwell and Killeeneen. Read on for full results.
The event comprises sprints, middle-distance, relays, long jump, triple jump, ball throw and long puck for classes from 1st class up to 6th class with points awarded for 1st to 4th places in each event. The events are split into 3 age groups for 1st/2nd class, 3rd/4th class and 5th/6th class and each school nominates 1 athlete to represent them in each of the individual events and fields 2 mixed relays teams (2 boys and 2 girls) in 2 relay races in each age group. There was a big focus on participation this year with Coldwood bringing all of its children from 1st class upwards who all took part in the events and Craughwell splitting its forces to field 2 teams with over 100 children from the school taking part.
There were some exceptionally good long jumps on the day. Athletes didn't have to jump from the board as they normally do in the U11 and older ages in athletics competition. The resulting jumps are a much fairer reflection of athletes jumping potential and there were some particularly impressive jumps in all of the ages. Read on below for details as there were too many good jumps for me to highlight any of them!
The leaderboard at the end read as follows:
