The Connacht Uneven ages Cross Country took place on Sunday morning in Ballinrobe Racecourse. The weather was bright and the footing good as the finest Athletes from the West competed over various distances on the fast flat course. Everyone was very enthusiastic about the organization and the whole event went superbly thanks to host club Lake District AC. Saturday May the 10th and our fabulous group of u15-17 athletes took to the track. Our group continues to grow which is testament to our inclusive, fun first, competition second strategy. We have over 45 members in our age group and this continues to grow. Maybe 20% compete the other 80% come to get fit, push themselves and have fun. Focus for the 20% is on getting the most out of themselves, but remembering to make friends along the way….
The annual Northwest Games took place in Athlone International Arena at the weekend with some fine performance from the small contingent of Craughwell AC athletes taking part. Cormac Kearney took gold in the masters M35 60m sprint in 8.07s with Sean Whelan taking bronze in 8.15. Cross Country season continued in force this weekend with the Autumn Open International Cross Country in Abbotstown and Day 2 of the Galway Cross Country in Tuam and further action in the Connacht Primary Schools finals in Leitrim. Craughwell AC athletes put in a series of outstanding performances on Sunday in Tullamore to help County Galway take the National League title in the men’s competition and the silver medals in the women’s competition, an incredible performance by the 2 teams under the expert team management of Sarah Finnegan and Siobhan Kelleher. Craughwell AC had one of its biggest weeks ever with a series of fantastic news and results spread across Europe from Tullamore to Dublin to Wales and Slovakia. Conor Penney was in action at the highest level of European underage athletics when competing in the high jump at the European U18 Championship in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. It’s being a whirlwind week for Conor Penney with his first foray to a European Championships at the tender age of 15, over a year younger than most of his opponents. Conor travelled out with the team on Monday morning to high summer here in Slovakia with temperatures ranging between 26 and 30 degrees most of the time, dipping only slightly at night time. Best of luck to Conor Penney in the European U18s Championships which is taking place this week in Slovakia. Conor travelled yesterday with the team to Slovakia and will be in action at 3pm Friday afternoon in the qualifying round and hopefully again 8:45am on Sunday in the final.
