Congratulations to Tomás Keehan and Maeve Curley who competed in the Irish Schools Track & Field on Sat 1 June in Tullamore, both producing the goods in their respective events with Maeve taking gold in the Junior Girls 1200m Walk in a time of 5.56.81 and Tomás taking silver in the Junior Boys High Jump with a leap of 1.55m.
Their success follows some outstanding performances from club athletes at the Connacht Schools Track and Field on 17th May in Dangan. The hard work been done at juvenile level is starting to pay off as athletes continue the sport into Secondary School and compete with the best in the Schools Track & Field.
Star of the day for the club was Cathriona Farrell who broke the Connacht record for Junior Girls high jump with a leap of 1.69m. This was especially satisfying for Cathriona as she hasn't had the opportunity to train much in recent weeks due to the forthcoming Junior Certificate.
It was a particularly successful day in the Minor Girls category for Ashley McDonnell and Sarah Helebert who between them dominated that age category in Connacht. Ashley won gold in the 800m and high jump (1.43m) and silver in the long jump while Sarah won gold in the long jump and silver in the high jump. Also doing exceptionall well in the Minor grade, Paul McGill won double gold in the boys 200m and shot putt.
Medallists from the club were completed by Maeve Curley, 1st in Junior Girls 1200m Walk; Tomás Keehan, 2nd in Junior Boys High Jump; and Sophie Ralston, 3rd in Minor Girls long jump. This was an excellent achievement for Sophie, possibly her first time taking a medal of this significance.
Well done to all!
