Connaught Gold In Sligo

Connaught Gold In Sligo

Saturday saw the even ages and Senior Connaught Cross Country take place in Sligo Racecourse.   There were again plenty of great results from Craughwell athletes of all ages – I'll leave the coverage of the Juvenille races to Mike who has a lot more detail.  If like me you associate Cross Country with rain and pain,  you would have been only half right on Saturday.  The conditions were amazing and I've never seen Sligo look so well.  Even at the end of the day the course was basically dry and the scenery was spectacular.

The Senior men managed to field a team largely thanks to the heroics of Paul Keane who despite us trying to discourage him togged out barely 5 days after a fast marathon.  I don't know how he did it.  Peter O'Sullivan continued his great form to take Senior bronze, 4th overall.  Peter's fellow International Martin Corcoran was 7th.  Mark Davis was 9th, and not too sure where Paul finished, but it was ahead of the 4th placed GCH runner which is what counted as the two teams were more or less even at that stage!

Well done to GCH who, as in the Galway Cross Country narrowly lost out.  I can't remember the city squad ever being so deep with new talent so we might as well enjoy it while we can!

Captain Fantastic Peter has a good eye for a photo and suggested we stop in Tubbercury where we took this apt picture on the way back 🙂  (He also recommended a nearby Chinese restaurant  which wasn't such a good call, but sure we'll let him away with that one 😛 )
