Craughwell AC Underlines Reputation for Long Jump!

Craughwell’s youngest athletes continued the club’s fine tradition in long jump when taking multiple sets of medals at the National track & field finals in Cork on Saturday. In miserable weather conditions, the U10s took 2 sets of silver medals with Ava Finn and Aíne Kelly combining in the girls’ event and Pádraig Martyn and Fionn McArdle combining in the boys’ event. To add to the fantastic achievements of the day, Rebekah Flynn and Emily Miskella took bronze medals in the U9 girls’ long jump.

These young athletes probably don’t realise how hard it is to earn medals at National level, so a big well done to them. For Pádraig and Fionn, it was particularly sweet as they had come 4th in Connacht and qualified by virtue of one of the top 3 teams being unable to participate this weekend in the National finals. With 5 of these athletes from the 2 schools in the parish, it was a particularly proud day for those 2 schools and underlines the standard of competition at the recent Christy Kennedy Sports.

I will post more detail on the rest of the performances in Cork when the results become available.

The long jump and high jump have proven to be the club’s most successful events at National level. Yesterday’s performances bring to 22 the number of athletes representing the club who have medalled at National level in long jump. This success can be attributed to the talent of our athletes, the dedication of our coaches and the fact that we have got a reasonably decent long jump facility at Craughwell NS.

The following are those athletes who have achieved National long jump success with Cathriona Farrell and Claire Ryder leading the way as the club’s most consistent performers at National level:-

          Cathriona Farrell (2003, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011)
          Claire Ryder (2007,2008,2009,2010)
          Jack Raftery (2005, 2006)
          Aidan Conneely (2008, 2009)
          Cian Garman (2010, 2011)
          Ryan Gallagher (2010,2011)
          Ava Finn (2011, 2012)
          William Finnegan (2004)
          Ella Bryan (2007)
          Tomas Keehan (2007)
          Caoimhe O’Donoghue (2009)
          Laura Cunningham (2009)
          Jane Trehy (2010)
          Lenagh Gilligan (2010)
          Aisling Keady Cummins (2011)
          Ashley McDonnell (2011)
          Kate Reilly (2011)
          Aíne Kelly (2012)
          Emily Miskella  (2012)
          Micheál McFadden (2012)
          Pádraig Martyn (2012)
          Rebekah Flynn  (2012)

With 17 of these athletes having attended either Craughwell NS or Ballymana NS and the remainder living within a few miles of our long jump facility, its no coincidence in my opinion as having a good facility on your doorstep is key to success and it’s paramount that the club continue to improve its facilities so that such talent can flourish. We owe a debt of gratitude to the men who gave up several weekends to construct the long jump facilities at the school in particular Eddie McNally and Fergus McDonnell.
