A recent study by a leading American University states “By 2010, almost 50 percent of children in North America and 38 percent of children in the European Union will be overweight”. This is a staggering statistic but is backed up by almost weekly accounts in Irish newspapers of predicted health issues because of rising childhood and adult obesity levels. Regular exercise should be like food and water to everyone – we should do it because it’s essential to stay healthy as well as getting some fun out of it.
So if you or your children are not already involved, why not consider athletics as a sport – it provides activities almost all-year around. It includes both team and individual events and is a sport that can stay with you for life wherever you travel. September would be an ideal time to join as its back-to-school time and the club kicks off a new season at that stage. Juveniles aged 7 and older can join the club, as can adults of any age!
The club draws its membership from many areas including Craughwell, Ballymana, Coldwood, Carrabane, Ardrahan, Ballinderrin, Kinvara, Clarinbridge, Maree and others.
The club is always open to new members and offers a range of activities for both juveniles and seniors – covering track and field (sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws, distance running), cross-country running, road running and circuit training. If you are involved in another sport, it’s an ideal partner sport to help boost your fitness levels.
The club provides for all levels of participation – from elite athletes to occasional runners and all the levels in between. So don’t let lack of fitness hold you or your children back – if you don’t exercise because you’re not fit, you’re never going to get fit!
The club has large numbers participating at juvenile level but its policy is to continue to grow membership and recruit more parents into coaching activities if numbers require it. If any parent is interested in getting involved, please let us know as we are always looking for assistance. No prior knowledge required – we’ll provide on-the-job training!
