Double Glory for Cathriona and Maeve at Irish Universities Track & Field
Having won the high jump title in both the indoor and outdoor Universities Track & Field for the last 2 years, Cathriona Farrell made it 5-in-a-row at the weekend when retaining her title with a 1.69m leap. This particular competition is not ideal for big jumps as its long and drawn out due to the fact that its combined with the pentathlon competitions. Joining the competition at 1.57, Cathriona cleared 1.57, 1.63, 1.66 and 1.69 with ease and looked on form to go much higher. With the competition won at that stage, Cathriona was unlucky to clip 1.72 with her heels and had to settle for the 1.69m victory. But her performance augurs well for the coming months. Cathriona's performance contributed to a very strong DCU team performance which retained the team title. Also in action at these championships for the first time, Maeve Curley made it a double success for Craughwell athletes when racing to victory in the 1500m race walk in a time of 6.41.15. Maeve was representing the University of Limerick and her performance was a record for her college. Also in action, Peadar Harvey (GMIT) finished 7th in the 1500m in a time of 4.17.10 while Tomas Keehan (NUIG) ran 8 seconds for the 60m and placed 6th in the high jump with 1.60m and 7th in the triple jump with 10.69m. It is a measure of the progress that the club is making that it had 4 athletes taking part in these championships with two national titles coming their way.If you like statistics, check out http://sindar.net/iuaa/results/ for the full results of this competition and every University track & field since Adam beat Eve in the 60 metre dash! |
