Predator Triatlon Club hosted the first in a series of four duathlon events in Kicornan Clarinbridge last Sunday. The junior events were U10 ,U12, and U14. Comprised of various distances with the upperend being a 1km run, 4km cycle,1km run. There was also an over 14/senior event which comprised of a 4km run, 8km cycle, and a 4km run.
Three Craughwell AC athletes participated; Diarmuid Harvey competed under the colors of Predator Tri, while Peadar Harvey competed in his Craughwell strip, and Conor Gillen competed in his Ireland jacket. In the U14 event Diarmuid took the lead from the start and finished a very strong first. In the Senior, Peadar and Conor led out the run and came home 1 and 2 in the first leg of the race. There was some very unconventional transition on Peadar's part as he figured out what to do with his bike at the end of the bike leg, dumping it on the ground was not accepted. That aside, Peadar won the race by a good distance. Conor ran into technical difficulties 2km into the bike leg when his chain broke and he had to drag the bike along for approximately 5km, but in good competitive spirit he headed out into the last 4 km run way down the field and clawed his way back up to 5th place overall.
So a good day for Craughwell with a double first in the Harvey household and a respectable 5th placing for Conor Gillen. The second event in the series is scheluled for Tuam Sunday week. The event is open, the cost was 10 euros for the entire series and it was a nice family day out with kids, adults and bikes in all shapes and sizes.
