Dublin Women’s Mini Marathon 2026 By Niamh Tuohy
On Sunday, 31st May, several of my friends and I joined 28,000 other women in Dublin for the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon. It is the largest women’s event of its kind in the world and has been going for 42 years but this was my first time taking part. Although I have completed a fair few races at this stage, it was a first for a couple of my friends which added to the excitement. As a girl in my mid-20s, I have really noticed the increase in popularity of running among girls in the past couple years, which is great fun to be a part of!
It was a bit of a later start so allowed for a nice, chilled morning. From the moment we arrived, the organisation was excellent. Our numbers had all been posted out previously and as we got near the start line in Merrion Square, we were all separated into our different waves ready for the start at bang on 12:30.
The first half of the route was tough. It was a surprisingly fast start to the race, and I definitely took off a bit too fast. Heading out towards UCD, between kilometres 3 and 5 there was a steady incline. The sun also decided to make an appearance from behind the clouds bringing warmer conditions than anticipated.
However, as we turned onto the far side of the Stillorgan Road, the sight of thousands upon thousands of women taking part was really amazing and inspiring. Women of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels were out running, jogging and walking. Of course, the downhill at this point also helped lift spirits! The last 2km back into Merrion Square were jam packed with supporters and helped everyone get towards the finish. This last bit was tough and all about forcing myself to get to the finish without walking. I did that anyway and finished with a decent time.
Race entry included a t-shirt and medal, and once you got past the line there was plenty of physio stands and other free treats. Overall, it was a brilliantly organised event and a really enjoyable experience. Taking part alongside thousands of other women was both motivating and inspiring. Despite finding it tough, it is definitely one I would recommend to anyone interested, whether it’s their first 10K or they’re a seasoned pro!!
