Fields of Athenry 10k Road Race
The organisers of the Annual 'Fields of Athenry 10k Road Race' have announced details of this year's event which will take place at 11:00am in and around the town on St. Stephen's day next. As usual, the race will cover a scenic route on roads surrounding the town and then finish under the Town's historic arch.
The event attracts a large crowd of both runners and walkers each year, which is testament to the popularity of the race and the high quality of the organisation. In 2006, almost 500 people shook off some of the seasonal cobwebs by covering the distance at their own personal pace. At the front end of the field, some of the country's best athletes fought out the top positions whilst club runners, fun runners, walkers and many others completed the course on their own terms. Each and every person who completes the course will receive the race's souvenir 'woolly hat'.
Although some entries will be available on the day in the Presentation College from 09:00am, pre-entry is strongly advised for the senior race to avoid disappointment and help speed the organisation on the day itself. Full event details are available on the organising club's website at http://www.AthenryAC.Com and online entries for the senior race are available on http://www.RunIreland.Com. Postal entries are also possible by downloading an entry form from the same web site.
For the first time this year there will also be a 1km Junior Fun Run for those under sixteen which will take place at 10:15am.
This is a non-competitive event and young athletes will run in the spirit of sport and fun. Every young athlete who takes part will be awarded a medal and a goody bag for their efforts.
Athenry sprint sensation Paul Hession will attend on the day to assist with presenting finishers' medals to our young stars of the future. Entry forms for the junior race can be downloaded from http://www.AthenryAC.Com too.
Race enquiries can be made to entries@AthenryAC.com or to Mick Rice on 087 2896989.
