Forest Marathon Portumna 2015

Forest Marathon Portumna 2015

Saturday 13th of June was a day of firsts for many of our Craughwell AC members in the Forest Marathon in Portumna. Noreena Murray Morrissey set out at 7.00am to complete her first 50k in a fantastic time of 05:07. Norenna an experienced marathoner made her first attempt at this distance and took it in her stride, looking in control throughout. Well done Norenna on a fantastic achievement. Louise O’Rourke put in a stunning performance in the 100k. Louise recently completed a 50 mile race so felt ready to step up to the 100k distance. Paced to perfection and looking in control at all times Louise crossed the line in 13:24. More to come from Louise and Norenna over these Ultra distances.

Craughwells biggest field was in the half Marathon which consisted of a long run in from the gate, and four loops of the park. Led out by John Fitzpatrick the loops were quickly picked off with a stronger field participating than in previous years. John placed 5th overall with a PB of 01:29, closely followed by Tony Nevin in 01:33.

First Craughwell lady home was Niamh Flavin who placed 8th in the ladies field in a new PB of 01:39. Emer Molloy continues her good run of form with another sub 2 hour finish for the half marathon distance followed closely by Mairead Lane just missing the 2 hour mark by the narrowest of margins, but as always finished strong. We didn’t have long to wait for Fiona Diviney and Lorraine Morrissey who crossed the line together in 02:03, with Pauline Burke making a fantastic return to running the half marathon home in 02:04. Great running girls.  Next home was Kevin Malone in 2:05, fantastic running from Kevin whose focus has been on the books for the last 12 months while he completes a Master’s Degree.

Next out was the marathon where John Ward and Brian Gorman fresh from their Marathon success in London were taking on the distance again. As with London the lads ran every step together until around the 18 mile mark where Brian pulled ahead to finish in a time of 03:54 with John crossing the line in 04:05, on a hot day with only the lightest of breezes. Valerie Fogarty was Craughwells only female athlete in the Marathon.   Val has now run in the region of 70 marathons of which Portumna is a particular favourite. Val finished strong as always in a time of 04:17.

A special mention has to go to Helen Van de Beek who was Marshalling for the day. Helen provided support and constant encouragement to all. Many thanks Helen. This is a great event going from strength to strength each year. Thank you Seb and all the crew at Forest Marathon.

There are some fantastic photographs from the day by John O’Connor at 77edenhill and results from all events are on Red Tag Timing.
