The Galway qualifying round for the National Community Games cross-country finals was held in Tuam last Sunday. The fine record of the club's athletes (and former members!) in qualifying on Galway teams was upheld brialliantly.
Grainne McDaid got the day off to a terrific start with a fine victory in the U12 Girls 600m, with Leanne Freaney finishing just outside the automatic 6 qualifying places that will make up the Galway team for the National finals.
Liam Forde and Oisin Doyle took 1st and 2nd places in the U12 boys 600m in a very hotly contested race and will help make up a super squad for the National finals.
Emma Bryne took 4th place in the U13 girls 1200m to make the Galway team, with Tara McNally unlucky to finish just 1 place off the qualifying places. Emma is improving in every long distance race she runs – perhaps having discovered her niche in athletics between this and race-walking. We didn't have any representatives in the U13 boys race, which is unusual for us.
In the U14 girls 800m, Gabrielle Tobin and Ellen Fitzpatrick ran strongly to take the last 2 places on the Galway team when finishing 5th and 6th.
And as in the Bible, we kept the best wine till last where in the final race of the day athletes from the club took the top 4 places in the U14 boys 800m with Nicholas Sheehan claiming victory followed by Jamie Spellman, Keelan Ryan and Matthew Moran.
So out of 6 races, we won three and will provide 10 members of the 36-strong Galway squad for the National finals. Well done everyone!
