Carramore 10k is the first event in the prestigous Mayo League and when Gerry Ryan toed the start line the result wasn't going to be in doubt. Unfortunately this year there was a very low turn out – the wealth of races on the calendar means that people aren't travelling to races as much as in the past. I was actually surprised to see the Moy Half Marathon getting approval for the same weekend as Carramore. I would have thought the AAI permitting procedure was designed to prevent such a clash. Everything I've heard of Carramore indicates that it's a superb event so hopefully there will be more participation next year – I'll certainly be there if I'm healthy..

Gerry had another super run on a breezy day. He said that John Byrne of Mayo AC went out uncharacteristically hard and this helped the Attymon man to a quick first 5k of under 15 minutes. The second 5k was slower due to the terrain and the wind and unfortunately in the last k Gerry took a wrong turn which he thinks cost him about 10-12 seconds. The end time was 30:40 which is really exceptional. Comparisons can't be made because it wasn't on a track but I'm going to do it anyhow because I think tracks are actually faster :-). This time would put Gerry 9th in the all-time world Masters M45 list and 1st in the current world ranking list by quite some margin.
All-time World 10k rankings List – 30:40 would put him 9th
Current World 10k rankings List – 30:40 would put him top by over a minute
In another good result for the club this weekend Peter O'Sullivan finished in the Predator 8k. Peter ran a solid race from the front but got ambushed on the home straight. It's happened to us all and will happen again I'm sure! Justin Niland had an awesome race finishing in the low 28s. Full results are here. Craughwell AC Juvenille Liam Moran won the kids 1k race with a powerful finish..
