Good Early Season Performances in AIT Meet
The inaugural AIT Baseline Track & Field took place last Wednesday in the AIT International Arena. An open event to allow athletes to gauge their early season form, hopefully it will become a permanent fixture on the calendar at this time of year.
Four athletes from the club took part. Cathriona Farrell showed she is back to her brilliant best with an effortless 1.75m clearance in the high jump and 3 extremely close attempts at a new PB of 1.80m – brushing the bar off with her lower leg on each occasion. Cathriona followed this up with an impressive 5.18 in the long jump. Sarah Finnegan recorded a decent 4.58m in the long jump.
In the 600m, Peadar Harvey ran a solid 1.26.98 in his heat. Hoping to be closer to 1.20, the early pace was a little slow and when Peadar when to the front after a lap, that time was already gone. But with splits of 28.9, 29.4 and 28.6 and feeling very relaxed at the end, it augurs well for a low 1:50s 800m from Peadar in the new year. Gavin Cooney made his debut on the track in the 2nd heat of the 600m. Running splits of 28.7 and 29.7 for the first 2 laps, Gavin tied up a bit in the 3rd lap for a 35.7 and a 1.34.09 for the 600m. It was a solid performance in his first track race and indicative of a low 2s 800m in the indoors.
