Historic day at the Irish Schools Track and Field

The Irish Schools Track and Field is said to be the highest standard of athletics in ireland and Craughwell Athletes representing Calasanctius Oranmore took a historic pair of medals this year.

First off was the Intermediate boy’s 1500m steeplechase where Damian O’Boyle had an epic battle, running a superb 4.37.35 club record to take an historic Silver medal.  This makes it 3 national medals (all Silver!) for Damian so far this year.

The next big race was the hotly anticipated  3000m where Jamie was the club’s big hope.  Ennis’s Kevin Mulcaire took the race off at a brutal pace and Jamie wisely chose to hang back and run with the chase pack (“hanging back” is possibly exaggerating – he was still running 68’s).   As the race unfolded Jamie found himself in fourth place as the final lap approached.  Jamie was familiar with the fellow ahead of him, having managed to outsprint him over 1500m the previous week at the IMC race in Dublin.  With this confidence to back him up he duly opened up with 200m to go and won a well deserved Bronze in the sweetest of fashions.  Despite the tactical nature of the race, the time was 9:01 – a new PB and club junior record!   Sweet!

Damian also ran qualified for the 1500m “flat” event and somehow found the reserves to line up for that beside clubmate John Cormican.  The race was run very tactically, starting off very slowly and ending up at a sprint.  In the end John finished 6th in 4:20 and Damian finished 7th in 4.21, great runs from the two lads.

To cap the day off, the Calasanctius boys 4×100 team featuring the lads ran a fine 45.86 to finish 6th in the Intermediate relay.
