Huge participation in secondary schools multi-events
Athletes from the club competed in huge numbers in the Connacht Secondary School's Combined Events held yesterday in Dangan.
The club is very proud of the fact that it has grown its number of athletes in the teenage age groups from 12 athletes in 2002 to over 80 today. On Thursday, thirty of these athletes competed in the multi-events competition in Dangan with varying degrees of success – a fantastic participation rate and almost certainly the largest of any of the clubs in Connacht.
I will update this article with the results of the competition when they come to hand but here's a brief summary of what I know and of the participants from the club
Intermediate Girls (U17)
There were strong performances from both Rachel Finnegan and Sophie Ralston which will leave them very close to the medal positions.
Junior Girls (U15)
Ashley McDonnell and Katie O'Donoghue took 1st and 2nd place in the 800m and 2nd and 3rd place in the high jump – performances which will put both right up in contention for overall medals. Good performances also from Orla Ryan and Karen Roche.
Minor Girls (U14)
The club has a huge participation in this age group with 10 athletes involved – Debi Kenny, Caoimhe Quill, Mairead McCan, Laura Porter, Sinéad Gaffney, Maria McNamara, Ella Bryan, Claire Ryder, Ailbhe Greaney and Isabel Lane. I don't have alot of details to hand but a 1st place finish from Maria McNamara in the long jump with a big PB of 4.69m and a 3rd place finish in the 800m should put her very close to the top of the group.
Intermediate Boys (U17)
Tomas Keehan took 2nd place in the high jump competition with 1.65m and will be in contention for silverware. Brian Birmingham performed very well in his events in his first time competing at this level.
Junior Boys (U15)
The club had 6 representatives in action – Ruairi Finnegan, Shaun Gallagher, Niall Rooney, David Farrell, Liam Dundon and Paul McGill. I don't have details of performances – but from what I heard Paul and Niall took 1st and 2nd in the shot putt and Niall was doing strongly in the other events.
Minor Boys (U14)
We had 6 representatives here also but I don't have any details yet on performances – Ross Haverty, Cormac Dillon, Jack Raftery, Brendan Gallagher, PJ Kelly and Christopher O'Connor.
I will update this article as soon as I have more details.
