Multi-Eventers Do the Business in Athlone (Updated)

Multi-Eventers Do the Business in Athlone (Updated)

A busy busy day in Athlone IT last Thursday saw the largest number ever of athletes from the club take part in the Connacht Schools Combined Events Championships. With the competition held for the first time in indoor arena in Athlone, it was a great introduction to the pentathlon for many of our athletes in First Year and a great change from the harsher outdoor conditions for more experienced multi-eventers. The club had athletes representing the Pres Athenry, Athenry VS, Loughrea VS, St Raphael’s Loughrea, Calasantius Oranmore and the Bower Athlone. In fact Calasantius provided the largest group of athletes on this occasion with great interest being taken in the sport by the school.

I will update this article with the actual results once they are published. In the meantime, I have added what I know below of the individual performances.

In the seniors, the club had 2 representatives for the first time – Maria McNamara and Maireád McCan. Maria who represented the Irish Schools team as an intermediate in 2011, was making a return to the pentathlon and performed brilliantly to earn 2 PBs in shot putt (8.61m – a club record!) and 800m (2.39.x) along with a 1.50m high jump and 4.81m long jump. For Maireád, this was her first pentathlon competition and she performed very well with a PB in the 800m and equalling her PB in the high jump and a good 4.97m long jump. Only for a stumble mid-way through the hurdles on her first time over hurdles in competition, she’d have scored highly there also.

In the intermediate grade, 3 girls and 3 boys from the club took part – Sineád Treacy, Tara McNally, Ellen Fitzpatrick, Conor Duggan, Aidan Conneely and Damien O’Boyle. Sineád was particularly impressive in the 800m, winning it by a long margin in an unofficial time of 2:31. Conor jumped an excellent 1.60m in the high jump which was a PB and also recorded PBs in the long jump (4.97), shot putt (8.25) and 200m (24.08), finishing up with a 2.46 800m.

In the juniors, 3 girls and 2 boys took part – Aoife Greene, Michelle Duggan, Ciara O’Boyle, Matthew McKiernan and Nathan Lynskey. Aoife leaped a PB of 1.45 in the high jump and won the 800m in an impressive time of 2.32 or 2.33 ahead of Shannon Lee while Michelle performed very well also with PBs in the high jump (1.35), long jump (4.48) and shot putt (7.19).

In the minor grade, 12 girls and 8 boys from the club took part including Caolin Milton, Lorraine Delaney, Ciana Reidy, Caoimhe O’Donoghue, Sineád Kennedy, Finola Kelly, Laura Keane, Shauna Tobin, Ciara Murphy, Deirdre Walsh, Fiona Commins, Michelle Keane, Daniel Callanan-Forde, Cian Waters, Oisin Lyons, Dylan Finn, Sean Delaney, Jerry Keary, Peter Martyn and Luke Finn. Oisin Lyons ran an impressive 2.14 in the 800m while Sean Delaney ran an excellent 2.26 as well as leaping 4.40m in the long jump. Daniel Callanan-Forde recorded the longest jump of the day almost breaking the 5m mark, with Dylan Finn and Cian Waters also near the top with 4.68 and 4.67m leaps. Cian threw the shot 10m on the day.
