News has just come through of Maeve Curley’s fantastic performance at the European Athletics Race Walking Meeting in Dudince in the Slovak Republic at the weekend. Maeve has been working very hard to target the qualification standard for the European Junior Track & Field Championships this summer.
The standard is 51 minutes and Maeve recorded a big personal best to better the standard by 5 seconds when racing to a 50:55 and take 4th place amongst a high quality field. The race was won by the amazing Kate Veale in 46:43 – smashing the Irish junior record held by our own Ann Loughnane with her world silver medal performance of 2003 at 48:19.
For Maeve, this is the culmination of months of hard work and she has more to come as she is not yet guaranteed selection with a number of walkers close to the standard and a possible head-to-head required in the summer to decide who goes. We wish Maeve the very best of luck with this – the club are very proud of her and she’s an inspiration to all of our athletes.
