Yesterday was a fantastic day for the club with 2 major pieces of good news:-
- Firstly the announcement that the club is to receive a grant of €100,000 from the 2015 Sports Capital Program for the provision of additional flood-lighting on our new 8-acre site beside the school and the provision of an 8-lane 125m sprint straight and long jump runway. The club are overjoyed with the allocation and it will hopefully enable us to do this work next year. We would like to acknowledge the guidance received from both Ciaran Cannon and Brian Walsh when preparing our application. With our membership spread evenly between both electoral areas, both TDs were delighted to help and their input was invaluable.
The club would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the role of Community Finance Ireland in helping fund our facilities. CFI’s Donal Traynor has given us fantastic support with our financial plans and in providing loans to the club on 2 occasions – initially last year to help us purchase the land and again this summer to help us continue our development.
- Secondly Galway County Council completed the final step yesterday in taking the roadway into our facility into their charge as a public roadway. This will enable us to very shortly build a carpark on the site and open it up for greater usage. We are indebted to a number of councillors for helping making this happen including Moegie Maher, Peter Feeney, Michael Fahy, Gerry Finnerty, Joe Byrne, Shane Donnellan, Gabe Cronnelly, Malachy Noone, Sean Canney, Anne Rabbitte, Frank Kearney, Jimmy McClearn,Tim Broderick and Martina Kinane. In particular the club would like to thank Moegie Maher and Peter Feeney for their leadership in this regard.
It is barely a year since we bought the site – with the purchase having completed on 21 September last year.
To have made so much progress in the space of a year is wonderful. Our recent attempt at a Guinness World Record in Dangan epitomised the fantastic sense of community within the club when we had over 2000 people take part. The support we are receiving from our members and the community is overwhelming – but we need it to continue as we have huge plans to build the best sports and recreation park in the country for use by the club and surrounding communities.
