If anyone watched the Euro Indoors you will have seen a young red-headed irish athlete called David McCarthy strongly lead the 800m, only to fade in the last lap. I watched the euro’s and was a bit dissapointed as though he was good, I’d heard a lot about David McCarthy and expected even more. What I didn’t realise was that there are actually two top irish athletes of this name!

The young David McCarthy that runs for providence is proving to be something special indeed. He has already joined the elite ranks of sub 4-minute milers having posted an awesome 3:57 a few months ago. Last weekend he won the mt Sacs 5k in a very impressive 13:42 – only 2 seconds off Martin Fagan’s pb for the distance. The full race is shown below:

Damian Bateman of Mullingar ran a super 13:52 in the same race. We had some other great results at the same meet, with David Gillick posting a 45:80 which is nearly a pb for him. Click read more to view a video of Gillick’s 400m.
