National Heptathlon Champions

It was another good weekend for a number of Craughwell AC athletes who were in action at the National Conbined Events Championships in Tullamore.

In the U17 girls’ age group, Maria McNamara added to the National Indoor Pentathlon title which she won earlier in the year by storming to victory in the heptathlon – winning the javelin and shot putt with throws of 22.44 and 8.33, winning the high jump with an impressive leap of 1.53m, second in the long jump with 4.60m and 800m with 2.45.52, third in the 200m with 28.93 and fourth in the 100m hurdles with 18.38. Maria’s score of 3384 provided her with a comfortable victory of over 100 points in the end.

Also in excellent form, Rachel Finnegan claimed the title in the Junior Women’s heptathlon, adding to the indoor title that she won earlier in the year. Sarah Finnegan was unlucky to finish just outside the medals when taking 4th place in the Senior Women’s heptathlon with a points total of 3196 – high jump 1.44m, long jump 4.67m, javelin 11.40m, shot putt 6.55m, 100m hurdles 16.64, 200m 28.09 and 800m 2.49.41; while Damien O’Boyle placed 6th in the U15 Boys pentathlon with a good performance – high jump 1.44m, long jump 4.52m, shot putt 7.91m, 80m hurdles 14.66 and 800m 2.17.48.
