Outstanding Performances in Connacht Multi Events

Athletes from the club put in some exceptional performances today in the Connacht Schools Multi-Events competition which was held in Tullamore.

The club had a marvellous turnout in the competition with over 20 athletes taking part representing 5 schools, including:-

– Athenry Vocational School
– Gort Community School
– Loughrea Vocational School
– Presentation College Athenry
– St Raphael's Loughrea

It was not too many years ago when the club had only 1 or 2 athletes still participating once they entered secondary school. Today's competition is a hallmark of the success of the club in retaining talented athletes as they progress through their teens and hopefully is a sign of the future as more and more of the club's athletes hit secondary school. In line with the age profile in the club, we had more involved in the Minor grade than in others – but hopefully next year this balance will have changed.

The following is a summary of the performances of club athletes. I will update it as soon as I have more detail on the results.

Minor Girls (U14)

The club took a clean sweep of the top 4 places

1 Orla Ryan (Gort CS) 1206 pts
2 Debi Kenny (Pres Athenry) 1144 pts
3 Katie O'Donoghue (Pres Athenry) 1120 pts
4 Caoimhe Quill (Pres Athenry) 981 pts

Also in action in this grade were Danielle Madden (Gort CS) and Kate Dundon (Pres Athenry).

Minor Boys (U14)

The club took 3 of the top 4 places:-

2 Niall Rooney (Athenry VS) 1608 pts
3 Paul McGill (Gort CS) 1585 pts
4 David Farrell (Pres Athenry) 1496 pts

The club had a fantastic representation in this grade with the following also in action:- PJ Kelly (Gort CS), Jack Raftery (Athenry VS), Cormac Dillon (St Raphael's Loughrea), Shaun and Brendan Gallagher (Loughrea VS), Padraic Tobin (Athenry VS), Ross Haverty (Athenry VS) and Liam Dundon (Athenry VS).

Junior Girls (U15)

2 Ashley McDonnell (Pres Athenry) 2153 pts
3 Sophie Ralston (St Raphael's Loughrea) 1789 pts

Junior Boys (U15)

4 Tomas Keehan (Gort CS) 2721 pts

Intermediate Girls (U17)

1 Cathriona Farrell (Athenry VS) 2656 pts

Good luck to Ashley, Sophie, Tomás and Cathriona who all progress to the National finals which will be held at the end of this month in Santry. The Minor grade don't have a National finals unfortunately.

And hard luck to Kelly O'Donoghue who pulled a muscle while taking part in the Intermediate girls hurdles. Hopefully Kelly makes a speedy recovery.
