Craughwell sent a strong team to Quilty last weekend and we were amazed at the quality of the field in this tiny race. There were a little over 100 participants, but to put the ability level in perspective, the ever consistent Martin finished higher up in the streets of Galway last year! This was a real quality event – the likes of which are all too rare around Galway.
Gary Thornton blazed his way to first place – according to onlookers he was in a completely different class to his rivals, which is really saying something when it contained people of the ilk of Rory Chesser and Jason Fahy. Despite the windy conditions, Gary was only 8 seconds away from Seamus Power's course record which really shows how well he is going.
Ennis Track put out a great team themselves and did just enough to take first place ahead of a very strong Galway City Harriers team. The solid Craughwell men's team of Mark, Peter, Martin and Johnny all ran well and came 3rd well ahead of Limerick AC. Martin won the M40 and Peter was 2nd in the M35.
It was a fantastic race to experience, and definitely one I'll head back to again, well done to James Sexton and all involved in organising it.
