Shauna Sets new Standards in Switzerland

Last week saw another amazing week from Shauna last week in Switzerland. Full report below, and the Club Records have been smashed and updated – looking good for Paris!!

Shauna Bocquet of Ireland at ParAthletics 2024 in Nottwil, Sport Arena Nottwil, on Thursday, 6. June 2024

Shauna travelled to Switzerland to compete at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix and Daniela Jutzeler Memorial in Nottwil.

With the qualification window for Paris 2024 closing on Sunday 16th of June, those two competitions were one of the last chance to get fast times and move up on the rankings.

Shauna started her competition on Thursday afternoon with the 800m. Looking for a fast time, Shauna hit the front from the start and lead through the first 350m, a move was made and Shauna followed the wheels but got boxed in with 200m to go. Shauna closed in really strongly in the last 100m and clocked 1:49″55, a 2 seconds PB and the sub 1:50 Shauna was looking for..

Friday started with the 400m in the morning but, unfortunately, Shauna had an issue with one of her wheels during the warm up lap and could not race, a DNF to start the day. The 5000m was in the afternoon and was promised to be a fast race, three athletes broke from the start and Shauna found herself in the chasing pack with another 4 athletes working together.

The laps ticked by and Shauna stayed with the group, taking her turn at the front and sustaining the fast pace coming home in 8th position in a sub 11:10 time, only to find out, minutes after the race, that there was a timing malfunction and no official times were recorded!

Following a lenghty discussion with the officials, meet director and other competitors, 6 of the athletes including Shauna, agreed to a rerun on Saturday morning, adding to the already busy racing schedule.
So here we go again on Saturday morning for another 5000m. Similar to yesterday, 2 athletes broke away from the start and Shauna was in the chasing pack with Madison de Rozario (Australia) and Merle Menje (Germany), the three of them worked well together through the 12 and a half laps and Shauna had enough on this occasion to sprint home in 4th position and recorded a massive PB with a time of 11:07″20.

Shauna was back on track 90 minutes later for the 100m and, once again, recorded a PB coming home in 6th position overall in a time of 16″38.

The afternoon session saw Shauna lining up in the 1500m and Shauna soon found herself with Madison and Merle in the chasing pack behind the US athlete McFadden, the three of them worked really well and closed McFadden in the home straight with Shauna coming home in a blistering time of 3:17″22, a 3 seconds PB and a third High Performance Standard for Paris 2024 in one day!

Thanks to her fast times during the 3-day Grand Prix, Shauna was in both the A finals for the 1500m and 100m for the Jutzeler meet on Sunday. The 1500m was first on Sunday morning and Shauna raced with the pack all the way, followed the moves and recorded another PB with a time of 3:15″74!
To close the week, Shauna lined up in the 100m and came home 6th overall once more with a time of 16″74, a strong finish to a very successful week in Switzerland.
