Another busy busy day of track and field was held last Wednesday at the South Connacht Schools track and field in Dangan. As often stated, the secondary schools track & field is probably the highest standard of juvenile track and field competition as it attracts athletes from all sports.
|The club’s performance in this event is going from strength to strength every year and this year continued the trend – particularly in long jump, high jump and middle distance. Some exceptional performances in the girl’s long jump events saw athetes from the club take 1-2 in the minor girls, 2-3-4 in the junior girls and 1-2-3 in the intermediate girls. It was a particularly successful long jump event for Sinead Gaffney who got a big PB of 4.53m and for Karen Roche who got an equally impressive PB of 4.48m. The highlight of the high jump was Oisin McNally’s PB of 1.52m when winning the minor boys and Maria McNamara’s ever-so-close attempt at a 1.60m PB when winning the junior girls.
The middle-distance races saw some spectatular running with no less than 6 titles coming this way – with Nicholas Sheehan victorious in the minor boys 800m, Conor Gillen in the junior boys 1500m, Finn Stoneman in the intemediate boys 1500m, Peadar Harvey in the senior boys 1500m, Linda Porter in the intermediate girls 1500m and Muireann Maloney in the intermediate girls 3000m. Highlight had to be Finn’s breathtaking 1500m where he recorded a time of 4:25 – a huge PB for him.
A long day wrapped up with the relays where the club were representing on a number of medal winning teams with the highlight being a blistering 52.5 second 4x100m in the junior girls event by the Pres Athenry team which featured Jessica Henneghan, Maria McNamara and Claire Ryder along with GCH’s Alanna Lally.
Results of athletes from the club are as follows. Note these results and times/distances are provisional pending publication of the official results and are based on notes I made on the day. Apologies for any result thats missing or inaccurate! If you see any mistake, let me know.
