the future looks bright – European Youth Olympics

Just had to post a quick note on the european youth olympics.  I never really took notice of the event before but the young stars representing Ireland in this event are really doing the country proud all over the place.

Who can forget watching Sonia O Sullivan make her brave charge for the line in Sydney 2000 until she was passed by the incredible Romanian Gabriela Zsabo on the home straight?  Well a couple of weeks ago young Ciara Magaeen broke one of Sonia's records and today she just broke Gabriel Zsabo's European Youth Olympic record in winning Gold in the 1500M in a new national youth record of 4:15, smashing the old one.  Amazing stuff!!

Also Shane Quinn did superbly in the 3k – coming home in 8:30 for a Silver Medal.  This is less than 10 seconds outside John Treacy's long-standing national record.  Quinn led from the start and had an unbelievable battle with the third placed man to hold onto his medal.  He had to lie down for 20 minutes after the event before he could walk again!

Just look at the highlight results so far and the event isn't near over:

Ciara Magaeen GOLD PB/NR/CR 1500
Shane Quinn SILVER PB 3000
Cathriona Farrell 4th  PB HIGH JUMP – 3cm off Bronze and 5cm off National record
Joan Healy 4th 100M

We also have lots of others in great positions for the finals – including Christine McMahon in final of 400Mh with National record time of 59s.  and yes.. another PB!  There are so many other stories.

Check out the results page for more info.
